UFOpedia vs UFOpaedia?

I've seen the X-Com research report archive being called both UFOpedia and UFOpaedia.

UFOpedia is the word I see on the in game menus but UFOpaedia can be found being used in several mods.
(Not to mention the UFOpaedia site)

Both are correct in the sense that both are used in the XCom series: UFOPedia is used on UFO Defense (and USOpedia in TFTD), UFOPaedia is used in Apocalypse (I've checked the manual) and possibly on Interceptor as well.

Both spellings are correct in English, so it really depends on the author's taste regarding which to choose.

This made me curious if this difference in spellings is also present in the different versions of the game, UFO: Enemy Unknown for the UK edition, XCom: UFO Defense for US

The original game had a very arcane spelling. Most of the seemingly misspelled words are not spelled like US or UK English. Defence is a good example, as both US and UK spell it 'defense'. I'm not sure where the spelling came from in the first game, but it seems possible to me that it was either a different English dialect or that these are genuine spelling errors due to the lack of a proper editing person on the team.

The original game release was titled UFO: Enemy Unknown, and the US release was titled X-COM: UFO Defence.

the US release used the US spelling:


the words "fence" and "fencing" are both derived from the english "defence".
spelling it with an S is an american corruption, and spelling the derivations with an S looks wrong to everyone.
(fwiw: we use en-GB in Australia)

Canada also uses the spelling of "Defence" for that word I believe.

They were pretty inconsistent. The PC versions mostly used UK spelling and the PSX version mostly used US spelling, so we uniformized it.

If inconsistency was the standard, then you could have kept both spellings distributed in a random manner

Only somewhat uniformized it - the standard ruleset file and tag have it called "ufopaedia," but the text entries follow the format STR_SOME_ITEM_UFOPEDIA.  Also, this wonderful bit from the language file:
