Unused Sprites from XCOM
« on: October 02, 2016, 02:43:13 am »
So in my quest to acquire lots of resources for my big mod pack I have planned I stumbled across this site that had some pretty cool looking sprites that were not put into the final game.

I do like the robocop and terminator ones! Would love to get them into the game somehow.

Anyways the more talented artists among us may have a use for these.

Apologies if posted before.

Always nice to see those :)

They are concept artwork for UFO: Defense that was released by Julian Gollop a few years back. There's already a few of them that have been modded, like the Holodrone (1st image, first row, third from the left) and a different color Cybermite (first image, second row, second from right). The names were made up by the modders.

I'd definitely be interested in those Terminators (and other people too) :)

My favorite is the giant bunny though ;)

I thought they had probably been seen before :)

Wish I was better at drawing sprites!

I can see a good few based on references. I love that there's Robocop just obviously there.

I can see him, the Terminator, The Predator, ET, possibly the Evolver, and The Xenomorph from Aliens on page 1, a Lemming from the game of the same name on page 2, and what looks like Lobo from DC comics on the third one. If only these were full sprite sets. Even just as a set of base resources to make others, that'd be a lot to work with. Especially some of those aliens...

On the subject of unused graphics, I pulled these from the demo, and there are some handobs still in vanilla that seem to match up with them, though I'm too lazy to go get those.

Cool!
I converted them to the standard bigob palette, see attached.

I deeply apologize for necroposting, but this might be interesting for someone.
I made a battescape sprite for one of the unused alien, I might do some UFO pedia pics later.

Awesome work _Brain322!

From what I've seen people have used a couple of the designs here, Cybermite, the "naked ethereal", the Xenomorph + the Waspite from the cover.

Has anyone made sprite sets for these ones?

Look to have the most potential (can't tell if they're from another IP).

Lil' green guy could be an early (non-psyker) alternative to the Sectoid.
White guy could be some sort of Doppelganger / Faceless.
Green warrior Bug, alternative to floaters
Beetleman. alternative in the Snakeman tier.
Hybrid Ethereal? Earlier/weaker psi unit.
The last two looks like good Muton-tier alternative enemies.

The second one in that row has been recreated by Gifty as a unit called "Calcium Man".

You can find it in this thread:
[UNFINISHED][ENEMY] Calcium Man/Oculon.

When you mention the "Naked Ethereal" are you referring to unit in oXc - War of Shadow mod by Jackstraw2323?

I was thinking of the second stage Ethereal leader in Vigilo Confido.

Originally made by jackstraw2323?

I noticed the Calcium man uses the old unit format which each limb/body part being its own image. Is there a converter to put together a spritesheet? I do be sitting on another unit that could use it as well.

e: Digged into some others threads in resources and found the Sethian and Gemini by The Martian were based on some of the other aliens on the concept art sheets (the dual flying jars and the samurai looking alien with a sword).

Indeed there is, it is an excellent tool created by Falko.

Code: [Select]
Features:
. combine sprites: makes many small singlesprites into one big spritesheet (better for linux/ easier filehandling)
. palette converter: has many option to fix and recolor images
. hwp builder: makes creating 4tile - tanks easy
. xcomconverter: convert vanillaxcom files to png, convert png back to PCK (for new terrains), splitup a spritesheet
. world editor: to change all parameters in regard to placement of things on the globe
. language editor: makes editing languages in rulesets easier

I'm constantly using Falko's "Palette Converter" and I don't want to think about trying to edit a 2x2 unit without access to Falko's "HWP Builder".

Here is the OpenXcom forum post for it:
https://openxcom.org/forum/index.php/topic,2980.msg33097.htm

And here is the website you can use to access the tool: (No install required)
https://falkooxc2.pythonanywhere.com/

Also, if you need to merge a split 2x2 unit there is another tool created by Buscher that is pretty easy to use, it can be found here:
https://openxcom.org/forum/index.php/topic,9548.0.html

Yeah! That is the one from oXc - War of Shadow. It's great.
Spoiler:

In the case of the "Calcium man" Falko's tool loaded the sheet with a bit of corruption.
(I haven't seen it do this before)
Spoiler:

I fed the 272 frames through Falko's palette converter and then recombined them without a problem.

So to save you some time, here is the fixed version pre-combined with the 8 rows and 16 rows setting:
Spoiler:

I'll also attach the palette converted individual frames in a .zip file for convenience:
Calcium Man Palette Converted Frames.zip

Units highlighted in BLUE made it into the base game.
Units highlighted in GREEN have been recreated.

Units highlighted in YELLOW appear to be recolours of units that now exist.

To make it easier to locate I'm going to list the concept art units I'm aware of and where you can find them.

Robin's "Holodrone" is found in the "Gazer Alien" mod:

Going out of your way The Martian, great resources!

I fiddled around a little with the LOBO(Loboid?) to see if there's some potential for a... dumber Muton? (close combat oriented), Regen gimmick? A terror unit? Bodyguard for the ethereals? Take your pick.

Without shaggy mane

Most of the other Concept Art Based sprites that have already been fleshed out feel like they fit in well in the tier 0-1-2 (up to snakemen, possibly) early game alien variety show.
