I noticed the Calcium man uses the old unit format which each limb/body part being its own image. Is there a converter to put together a spritesheet? I do be sitting on another unit that could use it as well.
Indeed there is, it is an excellent tool created by Falko.
Features:
. combine sprites: makes many small singlesprites into one big spritesheet (better for linux/ easier filehandling)
. palette converter: has many option to fix and recolor images
. hwp builder: makes creating 4tile - tanks easy
. xcomconverter: convert vanillaxcom files to png, convert png back to PCK (for new terrains), splitup a spritesheet
. world editor: to change all parameters in regard to placement of things on the globe
. language editor: makes editing languages in rulesets easier
I'm constantly using Falko's "Palette Converter" and I don't want to think about trying to edit a 2x2 unit without access to Falko's "HWP Builder".
Here is the OpenXcom forum post for it:

And here is the website you can use to access the tool: (No install required)

Also, if you need to merge a split 2x2 unit there is another tool created by Buscher that is pretty easy to use, it can be found here:

I was thinking of the second stage Ethereal leader in Vigilo Confido.
Yeah! That is the one from oXc - War of Shadow (https://openxcom.org/forum/index.php/topic,3097.msg35486.html). It's great.

In the case of the "Calcium man" Falko's tool loaded the sheet with a bit of corruption.
(I haven't seen it do this before)

I fed the 272 frames through Falko's palette converter and then recombined them without a problem.
So to save you some time, here is the fixed version pre-combined with the 8 rows and 16 rows setting:

I'll also attach the palette converted individual frames in a .zip file for convenience:
