Anyone have polygon data for WORLD.DAT from TFTD?
« on: October 15, 2024, 11:20:15 am »
hi,

does anyone have the polygon data in a similar .rul format to that used by falko's map editor and openXcom. Found sources for UFO:EU, can't find any for TFTD. Would rather mod that way, than directly to world dat.

Well I had a go myself at generating polygon data for TFTD from the WORLD.DAT as only OpenXCom rul format data can be used in falko's editor and bohemond's Globe tool.

I'm sure people have done this before, I just couldn't find it anywhere, though it is probably part of hybrid globe mods (but textures are likely changed). Having read the wiki about WORLD.DAT, I got stuck completely cause there was no mention of a "byte flip" being needed, once I'd flipped all the bytes, it was pretty straight forward.

This looks correct in bohemonds globeeditor.exe

It's a useful resource, the coastlines could be a lot more accurate if anyone wants to have a go at modding them, that was my plan anyhow...

Full (733 polygons) parsed data in openXcom format:

Hi, I see its been downloaded a few times, I wondered if anyone had used it for anything interesting...

I have tried adding more detail to coastlines etc...  here are south america and african coasts, not even tried europe yet, in TFTD it is a real mess, all out of shape.

All I've done so far is add detail by adding polygons and adjusting existing ones around coastlines. I'd say its more difficult than UFO because you are working with a "negative"... If you want to add an island to the map in UFO, you can just add a 3 sided or 4 sided polygon, but in TFTD water is the terrain, so you need to cut out your island, so you need several polygons to make a simple triangle island. It makes editing far more tedious.  I tried to think of a better way to do it, maybe using UFO data. Even though it is reverse of the TFTD map format, one side of every polygon in UFO could be used to make a coastline maybe in TFTD, but the other edges would need moving from land to sea... just an idea, not tried it yet.
