Updating from 1.6 and number of factions
« on: September 26, 2022, 01:33:56 am »
Hello

I have not played this mod for a while (I go through binges on certain games).

I wanted to come back to it, but the last version I had was 1.6, and maybe (?) an older version of XcomExtended 6.6

Can I update and carry on with my previous game (I am in 2022, and have bases all over the world and laser guns... Kickin arse and taking names)?

Also, I was thinking of trying to persuade an old school xcom fan I know of giving this a go. IS there a summary somewhere of all of the additions.

I was looking specifically a list of all of the factions in the game.

Anyway... Cheers!

1.6 is kinda old, so you might be able to upgrade, possibly with some save editing, but you'd be losing out on a lot of the changed progression.

A full changelog would be enormous and generally useless for the vast majority of players. And I say this as someone who has made such things for my own mods before.

Something akin to a list of factions can be had by either looking at the quick battle enemy 'races', or the source of those in alienRaces_XCOMFILES.rul.

I don't recall what 1.6 was like, exactly, but looking at an old 1.7 installation of mine, I think all the factions are still the same in general. Some have gone through greater or lesser changes. Hybrids, MiB, Shogg, Syndicate come to mind immediately.

  Thanks for the reply.

What do you mean by "Changed progression"?

I wonder if I could copy and paste one of my characters into a new game?

I found the game a slog at the beinning. I had just set up my final base with research and manufacturing bases up and running. Healthy bank balance. A hardcore army of agents

What do you mean by "Changed progression"?
New missions, changed missions, changed research, weapon balance, etc. New agent types (Olympians, Proteans, Kyberos, Shadowbats), new HWP chassis. A boatload of new countries on the Council to please or fail.

Cult manors are a big game-changer now. There are more generic cultist missions, too. Some interesting lore bits about the four cults getting increasingly desperate as you stomp on them. I think Advent, embassies and alien base keys were still a thing in 1.6? No more.

Ghosts have gotten much more fleshed out. Syndicate has been more or less finished since. UAC was actually developed into something. MiB were changed from their fake UFOs, and there are more of their craft flying around. More M.A.G.M.A. stuff. HSD to be their underwater equivalent.

The reinforcement mechanic which will make you hate crop circles and manors. :P

More that I'm not recalling offhand.

To sum it up, even if you can get some of the new missions with your old save, you won't experience them in their 'proper' place. The best example is probably the crop circles. If you have heavy armour or power suits, the MiB punks who show up when you dawdle won't even be speedbumps. When you're still in the 'two guys in a car' phase, they will faceroll you so hard you'll cry IRL.

I wonder if I could copy and paste one of my characters into a new game?
Probably. The only thing that might be an issue is their commendations.

I found the game a slog at the beinning.
It still is.

I had just set up my final base with research and manufacturing bases up and running. Healthy bank balance. A hardcore army of agents
Yeah, I know it's hard to give up your shiny toys. :)

Thanks dude.

Its kinda making me want to restart... at the same time I know I might want to plunge more time into other games after I have a binge at this

How close is the game to being "finished"?

It might be worth me waiting a bit until it get closer to the final version if it gets another update where I have to restart.

I cant give up *my* avatar in the game. Had over 100 missions iirc. Hundreds of kills. Absolute beast. I still remenber that first ufo mission I took on (stupidly, at night). Sole survivor, bleeding out, dragged that sectoid corpse back to the land rover, as his mates were gunned down one by one from plasma fire out of the darkness. The long drive through the desert back to the FBI hq. Hurling the broken sectoid corpse onto the deputy directors's desk... "theres ya f***** alien... now about that flame thrower and minigun you said was inappropriate for an officer of the law..."

What were the commendations?

Id want the stats and promotions, I guess the kills would be zeroed. I guess my in universe explanation was he was the "volunteer" on the alien mothership assault and got thrown back in time.

Well, as close as it's ever been, i.e. not very. Personally, I'd guess another five years? Recall how long Piratez was in the 0.99 phase? And it never got out of it, just changed versioning. Same deal here.

So I wouldn't base anything on XCF being finished or "finished".

Cool story!

The pseudo-medals/awards Solarius took from Piratez. Maybe that's what your 'promotions' are?

If kills get reset (and you'd have to do it yourself if you're copying), it would also make sense to reset all kill-based commendations (which is most of them).

I remember youd get like skills for different weapons (sorrry I am unable to check until after the weekend) awarded after each mission.

Id have to check the save game files.

I guess my last question is what causes the game to "end"?

I was never sure what the ultimate bad guy was supposed to be.Is the Cydonia assault meant to end the game (or the TFTD final mission... I never managed to complete that... id always end up quitting on the cruise ship terror missions) or do you carry on until all the factions are defeated?

These weapon 'skills' are one line of commendations, yes. Take annoyingly long to level up, too.

I think the current endgame is still just Cydonia. At some point you had to do the T'leth arc (and maybe even the underground arc?), too. But Solarius relented. It'll probably change again in the future.

Some factions will always remean undefeated, though. Oh, how I wish I could show these Council fuckers who's boss! >:(
