Hi guys!

Oh looks like there was quite a debate in here.. Anyway Thank you for all your replies! They will be very helpful!

I am playing on the center difficulty (middle one) because I want to have a challenge when i first play. I understand taking losses and losing, as I said earlier I play games such as Dwarf Fortress before :p

So this is what has happened:

I am learning how to play the game, and learning from mistakes.

First real mistake I was making was forgetting to wait till daytime to attack things :p I am just now fixing that

Second mistake was not priortizing researching new weapons. I ended up having to use rifles for quite a long time (but at least sold pistols cause I assume they are bad). Two terror missions I have been destroyed, with no survivors (I know I should try to get one soldier in skylander to abort mission but oops). Both terror missions involved these flying discs (at least 5 in the second one) I threw rockets and heavy cannons and rifle shots but I must say my casuality rate per disc was pretty high :p Did not survive, but it was close, second one it was 1 vs 1 in the end. I am starting to figure out how to better use time units.

I do not know what these discs are, I tried to use  a stun rod on one but it seemed to only kill it. Can they be captured? (So I can put them in containment and learn what it is, its lore and such?)

My third terror mission was a success, because I finally equipped my troops with laser rifles, 2 medpacks, 2 smoke grenades (and now reading this thread I understand their purpose a bit more), 5 grenades, 10 laser rifles, 2 stun rods, 1 large rocket, 1 heavy cannon (both use high explosive/large rocket), 2 explosive charges. With the laser rifles I had an easier time hitting enemies especially from longer ranges. I don't know how many rocketeers I should have but I only had 2 soldiers capable of carrying rockets at this point, because I have had a casualty rate over ... 70% until that point? lol UFO battles are not beating me though.

I was able to kill the discs this time (although they seemed to explode now when shooting them with laser rifles!) and encountered snake aliens for first time. (up until now I have been encountering aliens that appear as "The Greys"

About the motion scanners, I had two but they were destroyed in first terror mission and two new ones were destroyed in second terror mission, I better make some more. I saw their usefulness when watching yogscast play openxcom

I am now on my fifth terror mission, and it is going very badly. I brought same as third mission, except 1 plasma rifle for my highest ranked. (I just figured out how to use them, and seeing these posts here I can understand when to use them). I havnt tried heavy rifles of any sort yet, because I heard ?laser? rifle was worst gun in game? or maybe it was heavy rifle? or heavy plasma rifle? I don't know

Anyway in this fifth terror mission I encountered new aliens that are black , I killed one and in inventory said something like chrysallid terrorist or something like that. They are destroying me, it seems like anyone they get into melee range they turn into some sort of infected person, and once the infected person is killed another chrysallid comes out. They are taking many many shots to kill. I cannot kill them fast enough! (I have not let time pass long enough to see if these infected persons are dangerous before killing them, I have simply been shooting them)

They are turning all of the civilians into infected, and are rushing towards all my positions, which is not in great position vs melee. I have lost about half of my soldiers now to them, and I see no way to defeat them now. They seem to be able to move very far, so I am not sure I can outrun them

I supose I will get in the skylander and abort mission for this tim e, rather than lose all of my laser rifles and remaining soldiers, and the skylander itself for the third time

Can anyone tell me if these creatures can be captured alive? (hit them with stunrod but didnt put them down, not enough time units to do again, so had to shoot him) or if the flying disc things can be captured (hit one twice with stun rod but it seemed to simply die)? I want to be able to research them to read the lore on them, if the devs put such a thing in. I was able to capture a living sectoid engineer at least, and wanted to try that with other aliens

thanks again for replies as i learn how to play and have FUN

oh and my memory of the events might be off so if anything seems weird then i probably remembered wrong

Ok so is terrain pack what this is?

(first image)

https://imgur.com/a/qALUl

mine is what it looks like in second image, which is before they started using openxcom. (I know about changing the zoom level, but everything looks little different after they started using openxcom, such as the soldiers)

I am a little confused. So in games like Dwarf Fortress, you get a tileset and or graphics set and it will change the look of the game. When I see a mod like "terrain pack" it says it does things OUTSIDE of changing looks, What I mean to say is it does not seem like a mod specifically for changing the look of the game alone, but I might be mistaken

Anyway, I feel like I shouldn't use the terrain pack because it would conflict with the Lukes Terror rework, so wouldnt the terror missions have just the default maps again?

Sorry if this is confusing what I say, I do not really know the "terms" exactly, so it is hard to express what I want to say. I am wondering what changes the look of the game's graphics, without doing anything else, without conflicting with other mods or anything like that. Or is such things not possible with xcom??

If someone can, can one say the advantages or disadvantages of using terrain pack instead of lukes terror rework??

Okay I am a little confused,

I was able to get these mods in:

DARKENED UFO VANILLA VARIANTS
LUKES EXPANDED TERROR REWORKED

but I wonder now, how do you change how it looks?  (When I see "Darkened UFO Vanilla Varients" I worry that it only works with vanilla graphics?)

I was watching the Yogscast play XCOM (that is where I was introduced to it, in a livestream back in 2011, and also watching them play OpenXCOM the past two Wednesday and every wed till they beat it), and in the second stream when they got OpenXcom everything looked different in the terrain. I wonder how to do this? Can it be done without conflicting with the other mods already chosen to use?
---------------------------------------------------------
I am confused about Terrain Pack, as posted previously:

https://www.openxcom.com/mod/terrain-pack

does that change the look of the game or just add more maps? Will they conflict with the LUKES Expanded Terror Reworked mod and the Darkened UFO Vannila Varients mod? (Also I am worried that because I have the latest nightly, that Terrain Pack might not work)

-----------------------------------------------------

I like the idea for EXPANDED UBASE REWORK, I will add that to my mods. (I assume it will require new save game though yes?)

thanks everyone for replies!

------------------------------------------------------

oh almost forgot. I turned on in the options for troops to have little letters next to their name to indicate what they are good at, but I cannot figure out what each letter respresents. Is there any key to it?

And when I did a mission for the second time with skyranger, my rockets were on different people than last time, is there an option to have it saved (maybe i turned it off?) or maybe it will fix it self, but I wonder how it works in openxcom

For UFO layouts:
This mod from Hellrazor is the newest and certainly will satisfy your needs. I haven't played it yet, but Hellrazor is a very solid, meticulous modder.

For terror terrain:
This mod by Hobbes is the way to go. It's not just new terror maps but also some new wilderness maps.

I also absolutely recommend the Commendations mod from Shoes and Ivan Dogovich, it doesn't alter the game at all but gives some extra fun info on your soldiers' performance. But its versions are so confusing I can't provide the correct link myself. :P

Ok I will try the first one, but the second one, it will not work with the nightly I got which is closer to present than where they said they stopped updating it :(

if i figure out which commendations one to get ill try it too :p thank you very much

OK I got it to work! Thanks to all in community.

Now I would like to have help finding good mods for XCOM!

For now I think I would like some extra UFOs of any type (so it looks different inside), and also I thought to get the mod with the extra terror missions maps.

Do any of you have any recomendations or concerns? When I look at the mod portal I see lots of different mods for ufos but I am not sure which ones are best or most stable, and I wonder if the extra terror mission map one still works?

What do you guys use?

Eventually I think I will try one of the mega mods to change the experience of the game a bit, but for my first few games I do not want to do that yet.

now copy the contents of your xcom folder (ROUTES, TERRAIN, UNITS, etc..) to openxcom/ufo, then extract the universal patch over the top of that.

like this??

https://imgur.com/a/L6bkJ

it seems to work now anyway! now to get some mods! (I was thinking to get some ufo mods to add extra, and maybe that "extra terror mission map" mod too!

if i have problems again, I will post here! and if there is anything i should have done differently as shown in image let me know!

10
ok, thanks!

also, I do not need to have a copy out of the program files of steam, It is just a habit because other old games I played they sometimes didn't like being in program files when modded. So if it is simpler I can keep it only in steam too.

Ok I am going to go step by step. I hate computers. Windows 7

I would like people to show me how to do these steps properly, or to amend the steps:

1. Bought X-Com: UFO Defense on steam

2. Installed X-Com:UFO Defense.

3. Copied X-Com:UFO Defense from Steam folder, pasted to C:https://Games
(so I have a copy outside of Program Files)

4. Downloaded openxcom_git_master_2016_02_03_1738.zip from https://openxcom.org/git-builds/ (THE LATEST NIGHTLY BUILD)

5. Downloaded universal-patch.zip from https://openxcom.org/downloads-extras/

6. Created a new folder in C:https://Games called OpenXCom

7. Put openxcom_git_master_2016_02_03_1738.zip in the OpenXCom folder, and extracted. Removed used Zip file.

Now, I am confused. What do I do from here, and have I made any mistakes from here

I get confused because in the first link you show, it has me download a:

universal-patch.zip

and the readme says:

"To install, extract to your OpenXcom Data folder, overwriting every file.

If you need to patch original X-COM instead, you should check here: https://www.strategycore.co.uk/files/ufo-enemy-unknown/patches/"

And right now I am patching the ORIGINAL, not OpenXcom. So I am confused why I am being sent to install this before OpenXcom. So should I be installing this patch before installing OpenXcom?

https://www.strategycore.co.uk/files/combo-x-com-game-folder-patch/

and then I need to get openxcom,

then install the patch you listed?

It's recommended, that you do use the data-fixes, see here. It helps having them.Just get the necessary files from the original, all of the named ones from here. There's also a FAQ about installation.

As for the nightlies: They do have a risk of having bugs in, nobody knows about. However: The 1.0 version is known to have bugs, which have been fixed in the nightlies. Also latest mods all use the new file structure of the nightlies (so won't be able to work with 1.0, without additional work), so I'd stick to the nightlies. They also bring some new features, which are quite nice.

so what I should do is,

install the game (from steam)

then apply a patch

then get openxcom?

---------------------------------------------------

So I bought XCOM on steam. I like old games, and I have watched people play this game quite a bit and I really want to try. (I can play games with high learning curves, Ive played dwarf fortress, hearts of iron 3 black ice, games with bad UI or very complex mechanics, you know the drill). I really do not want to play the newer xcoms, they to me appear as if they simply try to wow people with graphics, the real strategy and tactics are perhaps not as good or difficult.

I do have problems with working with computers sometimes though :)

Anyway, here are my questions.

Do I need to apply any patches to my game before getting OpenXcom? (I got it from Steam). I already moved it out of program files, I am used to doing this with older games.

Is it recommended to do "nightly" or "milestone"? I cannot decide which is best course of action. I want to install some mods such as extra ufo type of mods, and an extra terror missions mod. Also I do not know if one must get certain tilesets installed or if it is recommended?

I would really like recomendations as to what is the best course of action
