Even if X-Com was intended to be fighting a losing battle (I don't think that was ever actually confirmed by the devs),

The first line of Alien Origins in the UFOpedia is "It is clear that we are fighting a losing battle on earth."  It's the message they're giving us.

Keep in mind that all of the computers are running DOS or Win95.  It takes a lot of money to  get  the IT department to work with that stuff, and paying that electric bill isn't exactly easy on those computers.  Maintenance workers on the alien containment structure require bonuses for dealing with the sewage system as well.

Hope you've got a blaster launcher cuz you're not walking out of that ship alive!

Or a couple of decent psychics to mind control a couple of the discs.

I wouldn't restart.  Losing only two troopers on the first terror mission is pretty good.

Oh, when you get done with the mission, check your graphs and look at Alien activity by area.  I suspect the total isn't 0.  The aliens are active, they're just active outside of your detection radius.

It's November 1999, Veteran Level.  I have 40 troops in power armor.  Once the grav shields get completed I won't be worrying about defense battles.

Yes, in the original a medium scout against a north map edge was impassable.

Playthroughs / Re: Highest Monthly Score
« on: January 25, 2015, 08:43:17 pm »
Veteran Level, score for October was something like 19,022.  I didn't screenshot the monthly report, but here's my graph.

I had four bases sitting and waiting while I trained up the psychics so I could capture a commander.  Once I got the psychics to a useable state, I cleaned them out.  The aliens responded by building another base near my main base, so I got the whole fleet on the ground as well.

Suggestions / Cold-blooded snakemen
« on: January 25, 2015, 08:27:30 pm »
Years ago when I started playing X-Com I mistakenly thought the snakemen were cold-blooded creatures affected by the climate in which they fought.  I figured out that this wasn't happening, but would this be possible to add to the game?  Have the terrain change their stats so they're slower in ice and tundra, but faster in the desert.  It's probably change their reactions as well as movement speed.  I'm not sure if changing their movement costs would really work well, but that could be modeled as reduced time units.

I generally don't play with mods, so I don't know about LOS for PSI.

First off, I fire any soldiers with Bravery 10 or 20.  They don't get on the Skyranger, so they don't become a panic or berserk problem.

If someone gets mind controlled too easily (first attempt and we're no where near the aliens or ship), then that means they have a low PSI score.  If they survive the mission, I shove them to the bottom of the queue and they don't fly.  I keep them around in case the aliens just got lucky (one turned out to be a PSI STR 67) or when I know I need to assault some non PSI aliens such as a muton base.

While I'm on a mission, if someone is being MC'd too easily or berserking after panic attacks, I have them drop their weapons and run for the far corner.

Since Psi-Strength cannot be improved, some Commanders believe that soldiers with low Psi-Strength should be identified and fired as soon as possible, before they are mind-controlled and shoot you in the back (and before you waste a lot of effort training them).

I think they're handy to keep around for assaulting that pesky Muton base or Battleship.  I don't get upset about the losses, and I preserve the troops who aren't jello heads.

My memory from past battles and this one is that you can have Interceptors take massive damage from one shot but still survive to return to base, or in this case to be hit again.  I was playing on Veteran level so that may have changed the Battleship weapon power.

No, UFO outer hulls and security walls have an armor of 100, inner hulls and floor tiles have an armor of 80, certain vulnerable walls have 70 armor, and damaged floor tiles have 50 armor. Explosions do half their damage to terrain, so only the Blaster Launcher's 200 HE damage is enough to guarantee you get through. The Alien Grenade has a damage of 90, which isn't enough to break through any UFO or Alien Base Wall. The Heavy Plasma can occasionally break some inner walls and vulnerable walls (guns do between 1/4 and 3/4 of their maximum damage.) There are also some mod weapons that are designed to take down walls.

For more information, you can check here: https://www.ufopaedia.org/index.php?title=Destroying_Terrain

Makes sense.  Thanks!

Okay, that explains it.  Thanks!  It was a rather uncommon occurrence for me.

Has anyone checked to see if we can use an alien grenade to get through the roof of a UFO?

Today I had the odd experience of losing all four Interceptors while shooting down a Battleship.  The Interceptors were armed with plasma cannons and all engaged at the same time.  All five units were using beam weapons, so I have to chuckle and wonder who got the last shot?  Perhaps an Interceptor collided with the BB after the pilot ejected, or the BB flew through the last Interceptor while crashing?  At least it was at the end of the month (July 30) so it'll help my budget when the 1st rolls around.
