Dr,
In previous experience I have adopted the strategy that coverage is the most important aspect of any xcom playthrough. I know that at least from the perspective of the orignal game that you can go whole months simply shooting down crafts and not doing any missions. Having many bases early will help that point score and allow you to take more calculated risks. I am unaware of what kinds of changes tfdt has with its points system. Until i figure otherwise I will continue my current strategy of aggressive expansion. I know we are poor right now but that will change with a little research and some time. It will also keep those Oceans happy. A happy ocean is a good ocean!
For more on original xcom strategy see this thread
https://openxcom.org/forum/index.php/topic,2503.msg25363.html#msg25363The other reason I don't care to spend money on weapons is that the weapons I have save the sonic pulser are garbage. I need Blasta rifles. THese uncanny and early base defence missions are making me look like a bit of a fool. They are catching me off guard as alot of my soldeirs are underarmed.
There are always advantages and disadvantages with any strategy . As with my experience as a Youtuber, a bad strategy is an entertaining strategy.
As for the motion scanners...Im a sloppy player in my tactics but thats just the kind of player I am. Which also highlights the above point.
