Research that's listed getOneFreeProtected
« on: January 20, 2021, 07:11:50 pm »
I have been trying to figure out how to get anti matter containment research and went searching through the X Com Files Wiki. As far as I could tell you get it from interrogating an alien engineer/leader. It's categorized under 'getOneFreeProtected' and this is where I got confused.

I didn't understand what it meant so I checked the Ruleset and this is what I found.

Quote
A list of additional "bonus" research projects that may be granted when completing this project. Each topic in the list is "protected" by another topic, which allows you finer control over when the player gets the bonus.

For example: you could divide the topics into early-game, mid-game and late-game and protect each group by some "gateway topic".

getOneFreeProtected only works when the research project is completed in a Laboratory. All other means of obtaining a research topic ignore getOneFreeProtected.

I still don't understand how it works. Any help would be appreciated.

You gota capture them and do it over and over again. Some share same topics and it sucks if an engineer or leader tells you about a ship type vs a completely gameplay changing tech. So i always stockpile engineers and integoriate navigators first to eliminate trashy rolls that they share with engineers or leaders.

Thank you very much for the tip  :). I am so going to do this my next playthrough. My current one's more or less over (only 2 experienced soldiers left and my weapons aren't enough anymore). Do you know how the getOneFreeProtected thing works? From the quote (if I am understanding it right, and I am not sure I am) it looks like the Anti Matter Containment might be locked behind some research that is not listed. If so, any idea what I can do to unlock it?

It's locked behind "Alien Vocabulary". You have to research it, then interrogate some engineers.

Thank you. Looks like it's going to take a lot of interrogations to be able to unlock either the turbolasers or the Gauss Weapons.
