No X-COM installations found
« on: February 01, 2020, 03:30:32 pm »
I'm trying to use the nightly on Debian Etch, and have tried putting the log files in several locations.  Nevertheless, OpenXcom doesn't find them.  For instance, openxcom.log tells me:

[31-01-2020_21-19-40]   [INFO]   OpenXcom Version: 1.0.2949b242b (2020-01-22 20:33)

You're missing the UFO directory.

ok, same here, using nightly appimage OpenXcom_20200211_bdfd52280_x86-64.AppImage on debian/mint.

As far as I understand -and according to the logfile-, below should be a correct datapath.
It obviously isnĀ“t, otherwise I wouldn't post here :)

I don't believe "mods" should be under UFO.

But it is very hard to guess what is actually going wrong (too much snippets).

Perhaps try
Code: [Select]
  tree ~/.local/share/openxcom/ > myFolderStructure.txt
And attach that file (myFolderStructure) together with the openxcom.log to your next post.

mods would have gone to /home/jan/.openxcom/mods, where config and user files are as well. I do have an empty subfolder mods there.

My guess is that it didn't find the "standard" directory (and its content)... do you have it on the same place as the openxcom executable?

Which directory would be "standard"? There is none of such name, what should be in it?  I tried moving the appimage to .local/share/openxcom, this did not change the error messages within the logfile.

okay. well, I have no such directories. I could create them, alas the data within will probaly be needed? Is it possible all this has to be placed inside the .appimage file? It did say "make the appimage executable and place (user/config and) data folders from the base game to one of the following locations, there were no folders standard or common referred to in the installation instruction.

I'm sorry, even as OXCE dev, I cannot help you with this, I am not familiar with appimages at all.

Where did you download the appimage?
Can you ask for support from the people that created it?

@Meridian An appimage is a way to distribute the program in such a way that the user does not need to install any dependencies, they come with the appimage. After giving the appimage execute permissions you can just run the appimage directly to start openxcom.

@lagrandeguerre I see you are using some non-default installation for openxcom parts:
Code: [Select]
/home/jan/.openxcom/  instead of the default
Code: [Select]
/home/jan/.local/share/openxcom/
Might i suggest you first try to use a default installation before going the advanced route.
Try the following steps (it should work for the appimage downloaded from https://openxcom.org/git-builds/)

Code: [Select]
# Backup you non working folders
mv ~/.openxcom ~/.openxcom.backup
mv ~/.local/share/openxcom ~/.local/share/openxcom.backup
# Now start the appimage (should give the openxcom error screen, but would also create the correct default folder with necessary content).
cd ~/.local/share
cp -r openxcom.backup/UFO openxcom/
# and optionally, if TFTD is installed as well
cp -r openxcom.backup/TFTD openxcom/
If you run the appimage now the game should start.

Please note those steps are based on what you have shown in this thread. I have no idea what other edits you have performed in the meanwhile.

Hope this helps.

Yes, "dependency hell" is a well known term not without good reason.

more on topic: I did not conciously choose the .opencom subfolder, given the hidden state I would hae gone for a single openxcom folder  containing all I need to run somewhere in my homedir. (given the choice, I would not use a debian based distribution at all, but this is another story. A rather long one.) Following your instruction, I am able to start the game. Thanks a lot. Interestingly, it now looks very different to the version I used on windows. savegame format is different as well, but I can easily start over, no problem.

so, for the record: ufo game data directories shall go to ~/.local/share/openxcom/UFO (or TFTD), savegames go to xcom1, mods to mods (duh), all in openxcom subfolder. The appimage goes to wherever you want.
Personally, I say the installation instruction on the website is overly complex, many users will probably resort to "do not annoy me, tell me where to put the files and let me start". ymmv.

Glad it works. Enjoy the slaughter game.

As for the quote:

You are correct on all points.
