Aliens vs Humans, Xenowar or OpenXcom for Android phone?
« on: February 18, 2019, 08:27:58 pm »
I'm unsure which version is the best for a small screen like a phone.
If the answer is OpenXcom, please can someone share the link to the download/instructions. I'm getting a bit confused navigating around.

Thanks
Ps: I don't think my phone is rooted etc, so I may not be able to load anything unofficial anyway.

If you want just play X-Com on your android device, better use this:
OXCE
Install it, then run first time, close. Go to folder "/internal memory of your device/openxcom"
Here you will see two empty folders: UFO and TFTD. Put original game files in these folders.
If you want to play only UFO, you dont need TFTD, vice versa.
And that's all.

If you want mods - create folder "mods" in "openxcom" folder, copy mod of your choice here, switch them on in game menu.

Sorry, that link didn't work.
Also I've no idea what TFTD is  :/
'Install it, then run first time'  How to install on a smartphone though?

Plus after running the program, I need to put 'original game files' in some folders?
I'm sorry, I don't get this. How would the program even run without game files.
And where to get original xcom game files anyway?
I did look online, and apparently there are tutorials with the downloads, but I cant see any, the apk file downloads and there is no tutorial at all.
Maybe there is a youtube tutorial

Thanks

What exactly didn't work?

XCOM: (T)error (f)rom (t)he (D)eep.

'Install it, then run first time'  How to install on a smartphone though?

Tap on the APK file... dialog opens... tap on Install button.

Plus after running the program, I need to put 'original game files' in some folders?

It wouldn't run, that's why you need to do it.

And where to get original xcom game files anyway?

From Steam or from gog.com.

As far as I know there is no tutorial... it's not particularly easy to record video on Android phone.

The link didn't work because I right clicked 'open in new window'. Didn't realise it was a download link.
I've managed to do most of it, but I can't get my mods folder in the game folder, I can't find where the game folder is located in my android phone, so can't add the mod folder.

Update:
Strangley the openxcom folder wasn't showing on the file explorer when plugged into my computer, so I had to use a file editor in android itself to copy and paste the mo d folder in place.

It's all up and running now, thanks very much for taking the time.

I do wish there was a simple zoom, and a 90 degree incremental rotation option tho.
Apart from that, perfect.

What's that? Can you explain?

Well, it's its too difficult for the program to do a fluid rotation. Maybe just choosing from 4 different viewing angles would be good. At 90 degree intervals - the same isometric view but from four different angles.
I thought the PSX version had this option, but maybe I'm mistaken

Like was said in the other topic,

it's not so much that all graphics would have to be redrawn, they mostly wouldn't, it's that rules for how to draw each of the walls, floor tiles and objects will have to be defined - for the other 3 directions of the camera.

Given how many terrains are there, it's a monumental task, and also requires an MCDv2 format to store that info.

IDK what's up with the PSX version, never seen it, but very much suspect there was nothing of the sort.

I started playing with the PSX version of the UFO and there was definitely no turning and zooming in it. This version was the exact port from the computer, with the exception of the control, converted under the gamepad (due to the lack of both keyboard and mouse, and touch input).
Twists and turns of the battlefield existed in some other tactical turn-based games, such as Final Fantasy Tactics and Saiyuki: Journey West. Perhaps just the memories of a few similar games messed up.
P.S. Ah, there were times ... And there were games from which it was impossible to break away ...
