What about humans invading aliens?
« on: December 16, 2018, 11:22:57 am »
Greetings to all XCOM players? I just had an idea. Wouldnt it be interesting to have game where we invade aliens. There are plenty of games where aliens invade Earth but i didnt see one where exact opposite happens. It would be interresting theme for a mod or a game where we have our revenge and invade their own planet. What do you think?

So basically, you have a peaceful multi-species society living, say, on Mars, and suddenly X-Com Marsec attacks?

Sure, why not. It's an idea for a total conversion mod like any other. At least you have many unit sprites.
One problem I can see is that alien sprites don't allow kneeling. And kneeling is fairly important in X-Com.

Only in mods, IMO.
In vanilla, kneeling is almost never useful... and many times actually bad for you.

Would you mind elaborate a bit why this is bad?
This thought never crossed my mind so i am kinda curious as to why kneeling hurts the player.

Thank you FeruEnzeru. I think it would be something like that humanity in year 203X sends an Avenger class ship to their planet/colony and you would be in role of ships commander. You would need to research completely new weapons which aliens use on their homeworld and so on.

We send a spacedrill to look for oil on another planet, the natives get all upset that the drilling is ruining their ecosystem and you need to eliminate them before they cut into the oil corporation's profits.

If you fail, you're demoted and end up as a janitor

Didn't James Cameron already made a movie out of this?

Here's a flip of the EU script.

The aliens have been in Cydonia without contact. Climate change and the rampant excesses of people with power and money have ravaged Earth. Our underfunded space programs discover alien life on Mars, kept going through responsible planning and high technology. Between genetics, psionics, and habitat technology their every legitimate need is fulfilled.

Negotiations fall through due to human greed and alien wariness. The aliens refuse to give the entirety of their secrets over and Earth's governments cannot agree on a level of alien access to the planet's airspace and surface.

A squabbling array of nations begin creating a shadow army to fight and steal from the aliens, while the funding nations attempt further negotiations if only as a ruse.

As XCOM your role is to manage an army of privateers, raid the aliens, and wherever possible manipulate the public image they have. High bounties will be paid for equipment, cultural items, and research.

Business as usual on Earth. Until the pacts start being made at least, and countries drop out of the council.

Sounds great. Such mod would also create oportunities to implement new alien weapons and new earth weapons based on research from previous war. You would start with some less powerful plasma weapons made on earth and advanced laser rifles which would be at the time more widespread than conventional firearms.

Could be great if done properly.

The alien world is strange and exotic, full of alien environments. An entirely new world to explore. Full of ADVENTURE!

The alien empire is vast and multi-racial. There are actually multiple factions, species, factions, tributaries, vassals, all working together... Until you come along.

Humans have used tech to infiltrate alien defenses, rather than blasting things from orbit.

Due to being the invading forces, humans must deal with serious logistical issues. Imagine waiting a terran week for new agents to arrive.

Humans can infiltrate alien society (perhaps masquerading as the aliens' own human auxiliaries?) and then creating their own infiltration. Giving the subject species ideas of freedom and self-determination. Create resistance cells, hire alien mercenaries, freeing aliens from mind control, preach the religions of Earth to the godless alien masses.

Start stealing alien technologies, sabotaging alien industries, terrorizing alien cities, raiding alien colonies, pirating alien trade vessels, kidnapping alien civilians, and generally unleashing complete chaos and havok upon their society.

All payback for the horror they infringed upon the human race over eons. And BOY, does it feels good to hit back.

(If you want to play a moral ambiguity card, show how X-COM is becoming little better than the aliens)

Microprose actually published such game.
It was called Master of Orion.
Although ivaders there just did planetary bombardments.
Aliens in XCOM are these "steampunk" aliens from H.G. Wells.

Heh, even that old multiplayer open source game netrek had planetary bombardment.  It only had 4 races, 3 that were alien and 1 human although technically the federation isn't all human.

The game looks like realtime Master of Orion. Probably was the inspiration for the game.

Netrek inspired quite a few later games.  It was one of the pioneers of internet based multiplayer team oriented real time graphical games.  It predates the world wide web.  In turn, netrek was inspired by prior games, such as Empire, on the PLATO computer system/network.  PLATO was way ahead of its time.

There was 3d animated series about similar concept. And it also had the concept of using the whole planets as space travel vessels. Guess with star's energy you can indeed send a planet flying. But will need a lot of time to accelerate and decelerated without breaking apart. Imagine Solar system getting an alien planet with aliens having plan to use the Sun's energy to continue their travel. Unfortunately the Sun will get extinguished in process...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadow_Raiders
Quote
Shadow Raiders is set in a five-planet star system known as the Cluster. The four inhabited planets are in a constant state of war, always raiding one another for resources unique to each planet. However, when an alien named Tekla comes from another solar system, she brings a warning: the Beast Planet is coming. Now Graveheart, a humble miner of Planet Rock, must convince the leaders of Fire, Rock, Bone, and Ice to put aside their differences and stand together against the Beast, their new common enemy.

The story begins as Tekla's homeworld of Planet Tek is consumed by the Beast Planet. She and her robotic companion, Voxx, escape to the Cluster through a Beast jump portal to warn them of the impending danger. Tekla is pursued by Beast drones and crash-lands on Planet Ice, where she is rescued by Graveheart. The drones subsequently attack and slaughter the combined forces of Rock and Ice in the area, leaving only Tekla

A large part of the series mythology in the second season is the World Engines, a propulsion system built into the planets of the Cluster (and presumably many other worlds, since two different planets in different solar systems have them) by an ancient alien race. Using five mountain-sized energy thrusters which emerge from the planet's surface, the World Engines can propel a planet through space at great speeds. A combination of an atmospheric shield and artificial gravity generators keep the sudden shift in orbit and lack of a star from killing everyone on the surface. The Prison Planet has a variation known as Teleport Engines, which teleport the world to different locations in space instantly. The same artificial gravity and atmospheric shielding technology is used to protect the inhabitants. Each set of engines is located at the core of its world and can be reached using Telepods, small platforms on the surface of each world. The Telepods send the user to the core of the planet where they can use the computer to move the planet. The Telepods can also be used to move people from one planet to another.
