Hi everyone!

I'm new to Open X-Com (but long time player in X-Com 1 and 2) so perhaps my question is about well-known issue.
I wanted to add some melee weapons into Alien arsenal (to add some aristocratic-Jedi streak to psi-using leaders and commanders) But the aliens didn't recognize it as a functional weapon just like in TFTD. So my sword indeed was turning into a ceremonial item for grenadiers.
However the funny thing happened when I took MC over sword-wielding alien and started slicing and dicing. When I stopped MCing him the next turn he ran to my soldiers and started killing them with the sword! Maybe I turned it into active weapon like the one used for reaction fire but it's just a speculation. Never heard about something like that in TFTD... but I've never checked.
With so many melee and alien weapon mods I would expect that it is known issue and someone should know how to activate the melee weapon automatically (if it is possible at all)

P.S: I'm using v.1.0 and haven't yet tried nightly.

Try nightly. 1.0 is completely obsolete now, and has been for a long time.

Just to be sure, have you defined their clip size as -1? If you don't, it's set at default 0, which means the aliens think they can't use it due to no ammo. (Even though you can't have melee with clips, I tried.)

No, I didn't set anything for clip size. However as I said it didn't prevent them from using it when you "showed them how".

Anyway I updated to the latest nightly. When I tried it I was glad to see aliens using my sword. While playing I discovered that I forgot to turn on standart UFOextender Gun melee mod that was turned off after update. Then the mentioned bug returned (several test missions in the row). I thought "A-ha! Here's some conflict... if I don't understand how it can arise at all". Turning off fixed it... but turning on again haven't reproduced the bug. So I'm not really sure what's happening here. ??? Need more testing.

Set clipsize: -1 for all your melee weapons and see if it solves the problem (it should, I have lots of combat experience with this). Not sure with GunMelee, this mod could be outdated thus causing some extra problems, but that's not very likely since it's an official mod. Note: aliens won't use GunMelee as far as I know, meaning they will use ranged weapons only for ranged attacks.
Curious thing with aliens using melee weapon they've been unable to after you show them how... But that's some unintended side effect, not a bug.
