XCOM 2 - Perhaps a Piratez mod is in order?
« on: January 31, 2016, 06:02:34 am »
Considering the huge amount of moddability with XCOM 2 and the whole underground / on the run aspect; could make for a really decent port!

That might be, but I don't think making textured models for 1000+ game objects (items, guns, armors, creatures, ships, rooms) is humanly possible, unless you have an army of 3d gfx-trained Beastmen at your orders :) Plus I highly doubt that Firaxis' mechanics can support even 25% of current OXCom features, nevermind OXCE+. But that's a secondary concern.

It's a bit like my previous mega-project (co-produced with Solarius). There were 3 games we could base it on: Civ: Call to Power, Call to Power 2 or Civilization 4. Civ: CTP 2 and Civ 4 have lost for a very simple reason: no support for orbital cities and orbital warfare.

Go see for yourself. There's also a LP of 2-year 5-player game there, written in large part by yours truly, from agriculture to annihilators.

That must have been some fun play.

Must say it looks like a really massive undertaking that mod. If only i know where i put those old civ  disks (probably better for my time if i don't ) ;)

Just for clarification: it's for the Civilization: Call to Power, which is a different game from Civilization (though they are similar in design). In short, it's Civilization with future tech, functioning orbit and more advanced (and saner) military aspect, including stacking units, different unit types etc. (a bit like in Emperor of the Fading Suns, if you know that gem).
And we started from there and made it 10 x more awesome.

We already know that there is almost no limit because XCOM2's modding tool is more or less the engine with the source scripts. How easy it will be depends of the community behind this and how many asset they will produce.

If you get something at the level of a Skyrim body mod (or you could import one) then you're on cruise control.

Check your body temperature, Boltgun. Yeah a community provides assets and making some sort of a mod pack would be easy, but an original mod? Yeah, the basic engine, why would anyone ever use it for a mod instead of making a new game in unreal engine 4 (FREE, sort of)? The amount of work is close (ie. beyond insane for a single person, unless you conform to pre-packaged standard designs) but you can actually make money on it, and you won't be helping Firaxis to survive. Their games are crappy, Beyond Earth is worst so far, their only hope is modding community which can turn any crap into gold, for free, especially in the current age of easy-to-use 3d gfx tools and many unemployed people.

The amount of hype for the modding in xcom2 is pretty unrealistic honestly. It's still using unreal, and unreal has been a near closed system to modding for a long time. I sincerely doubt epic made 4 more friendly, and that firaxis can unfuck it at all.

An actual 3D piratez would be pretty cool though.

Because the whole tactical game with geoscape is already done, and making an new game from scratch involve a lot more like a complete game design and playtesting.

The Bethesda community already turned crap into gold so that will happen.

If you mean mechanics, these belong to the dustbin, maybe with the sole exception of rotating earth object. As for 3d objects, maybe weapons and city maps could be kept but not much else.
