Secret Pacts that confuse me...
« on: August 10, 2015, 12:43:35 am »
I've been playing for 40+ missions. Then I lose the USA to a "secret pact" despite the fact that
  • My biggest and best base is in the USA
  • I don't think I've lost even one fight in the USA
  • I've been mowing down the aliens generally

I did have an alien base in South America that took me a while to detect (hovering aircraft don't seem to detect as well as they did in the original?) But I don't think I ever lost a country in the original based on problems in another continent, so I am confused.

This is in 1.0, not the nightlies, FWIW.

I think it is impossible to foil Alien Infiltration mission, only delay its completion by destroying scouting UFOs.
It just gets randomly generated, then battleship spawns and thats it - by the end of the month you lose a topmost country from one specific area, even if you shoot battleship down.

I think only Russia is immune to Infiltration, because its spread across multiply areas, or because it isnt specified in one, or something else along those lines.

You are most likely facing an Alien Infiltration. This has nothing to do with the alien base you found.

This is a nasty mission, one of those that are aimed at getting you to go to Cydonia instead of lingering on Earth. In your case, aliens will convert countries in North America over time, not much you can do about it, unfortunately.

Indeed, Russia cannot defect to the Aliens, unlike every other country in the game. It was hardcoded not to in the original, and a similar situation comes from the the way the rulesets are written for OpenXCom.

Hmm, thanks. Weird that it happened this way.

Probably time to give this a rest...

just an FYI: a signed pact means an alien base gets built.

If you see a base in a capital and see a base and a battleship then give up trying to save the country and go for the base if you can

Don't give up just because of this!  Believe me, you can still win even with most countries siding with the aliens.

Well, we just had all these points. In principle, if you know how to make money in this game, you can't really loose for lack of funding countries. Russia will remain indefinitely, so there's no reason to panic. Aside from that: Forget about the idea to keep countries forever. Won't happen...
