Game running fine?
« on: May 15, 2010, 06:22:21 pm »
Despite the extremely incomplete state, I'd like to know if anyone has had any trouble just trying and running the game on their PCs.

I've tried it on Windows XP that was itself running inside a virtual machine (VMWare Fusion, to be precise) on my Mac. So far, it loaded nicely using UFO Defense Gold (Windows) data files.
But right now I'm trying to compile the code directly on Mac OS X and see what happens. Maybe I should start a special thread for this..

Sure, I set up a Contributions forum if you wanna post there.

I was gonna try doing a Mac version myself, but I don't have any handy besides at university. This might help you out with SDL on Mac: https://www.lazyfoo.net/SDL_tutorials/lesson01/mac/xcode/index.php

Got it to successfully compile with Visual Studio 2010 under WinXP 64-bit. I do not seem to be able to run the game however, I get the following error message:

ERROR: Failed to load palette.

in the console. I also noticed the DATA folder was empty, I'm taking a wild guess it's not supposed to be that. Keep up the good work!

Here I am providing pre-compiled versions to save people the trouble, and here they are compiling it themselves. Horrifying! :P

Anyways, you are quite right:

And like mentioned in the Downloads section, you will need a DATA subfolder with a copy of X-Com to run the game.
Please read the instructions carefully. :)

Ah yes I see. My mistake  :-\

Anyways good news I got it to work now :P Do you intend to replace all the graphics with something more open source licensed? Or will you require users to have a copy of x-com on their HD?

Once the game supports different graphics and there's enough artists to replace all of them (and there are a lot of them), sure. But for now X-Com is a requirement.
