Big props to the developers and modders and question
« on: October 04, 2014, 12:14:51 am »
Hi.

I'm a old gamer with kids, first played xcom back on PS1 and later PC back in the day.

I just wanted to thank all the people who work hard on this game, both vanilla open xcom and modders, you peeps have magically transported me to being 13 again and playing xcom for hours.

That being said, does anyone know of any other similar projects?  I don't mean the xcom projects such as UFO:AI, but other classic games that people have worked to make open source?  I have played some OpenTTD and some dune, but haven't seen a project quite like this for any other game.

And a thought, with all the talent here, does anyone have any personal projects, such as original games they are working on/have made?  Would love to play if you do!

Thanks and happy bug hunting!

Several open-source remakes were mentioned in a developer post around the time of 1.0's release (and a few more in the comments for that post):

Several remakes also appear in the Linux Game Awards (OpenXcom was nominated for this and finished 2nd under OpenMorrowind in May):

Also, there is X@COM, Xcom imagined as a rougelike:

luke83 is looking for some people to help out on Tuxemon, an open-source version of Pokemon.

I know that Solarius Scorch worked with someone else on a large mod for one of the Civilization games. I don't have a link for that though. There's also Dioxine's Piratez and the upcoming OpenTftD, but I'm sure you already know about those two.

And of course, lets not forget OpenApocalypse.

pmprog and JonnyH are working on that. :)
And of course, would welcome assistance as it is just getting off the ground.

Cheers, Ivan :D

Doom has had many projects over the years.
Zdoom (GZdoom for hardware renderer) is a very moddable variant, for example it's the engine that runs the Brutal Doom.
ZDaemon is a multiplayer port, my favorite for cooperative play. Modern net code makes it play very well even with players from halfway across the globe.
