Progressing very slowly :) But every once and a while I continue.
One thing I noticed is how we, dutch people, are so used to the english words when it comes to science fiction, that it sounds very strange to see them translated in dutch in a game.
For example "alien" is a word that I normally use when I talk. But in proper dutch it's "buitenaards wezen" (en:"foreign creature")...

That is a side-effect of using English a lot. And it's not limited only to the Dutch people. You should hear my wife mixing English with Romanian, and somehow still making sense of what she's saying :)

haha yeah your right! it really sounds weird!
it would be fun but i probably be playing in eng most of the time.
and its just great to be "on the map"
every dutch guy will at least crack a smile when having dutch as an option.

i would love to help on this
(becase i have no mentionable computer skills, and so i can not help in other areas)
but unfortunatly i dont have alot of spare time.
and my grade on "Nederlands" wasnt to write home about when i finished school.
so maybe even better if i dont.

Pfft, say "alien" to anyone and their grandma around here. And they will ALL know what you mean ^^

But yeah, translations always sound weird. As all the word humour is altered... :(
Though there are some cases, where it actually sounded better in Dutch... ^^

Also: Ja, ik ben Nederlands... :P

Hehe, so we are with 3 people here that speak Dutch but prefer to play the game in English. I don't think that translation is ever going to be finished, but if anyone would be interested, I can mail or put online somewhere the partial translation.

Why not simply add it to the repo?

+1 to that.  I'd like to take a stab at the translations.  I don't mind starting from scratch, but it would be a shame if your work would go to waste.

No need to do things twice... XD

I've added a partial Dutch translation to the repository, I had a newer version with more labels translated on my work laptop, but after a laptop swap I didn't think of making a backup of the file. Oh well.
Note that I sometimes skipped a series of labels and then continued with another series further down in the file.

A careful diff can fix the missing stuff. A partial translation would encourage people to contribute.

Why not add a (partial) notice in the translation's title?

I'm wondering what a good translation of "ethereal" is.  There's a Dutch word for, for example "ethereal oils"/"essential oils" which is "etherische olie". See also https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Etherisch

I was thinking about "etherische" as in "dit is een sectoide, dat is een etherische en dat is een slangeman".  A bit like we might call a Russian "een russische", but I think it's strange to use words like this because it seems something needs to follow it.  Ie, "een russische man".  You'd generally use a shorter, "terminated" word like "een rus" when that's what you're talking about. There ought to be a shorter term like that for ethereals, perhaps simply "een ether"?  What do y'all think?

What would we call these beings when an invasion would truly be happening?

I would call them Ethereal, because it's how I know them from the beginning... I think you have to ask someone who doesn't know the game :)
