Ok... so where is Elerium coming from?

The aliens sure don't need to fight for it.  And if you raid the alien base you get lots of it....  Mars?  Maybe they have an unlimited supply?

Eh I think when you beat the game it is said that you find elerium mines on mars or something like that. Or maybe it is in the intro to one of the other games. I think in apocalypse there is a company that mines it too.
Personally I think it should be artifically produced by the aliens in a Dyson Sphere, like a form of energy storage. You know like Oil today, just better.
Wasn't there a machine in one of the transformer movies that produces energon by harvesting suns?

Now that's the thing, there is a formula for energy conversion into mass.  Maybe they got it wrong, its element 775 or something like that.  But yeah, not terrestrial but maybe they can extract and concentrate energy, or they have a process of creating unstable isotopes using super heavy elements...

Need to reread the elerium description again....

the point about elerium is basically this: according to 1990's lore, there are theoretical "islands of stability" outside of the known table of elements, and element 115 (that is, an atom with 115 protons in its nucleus) was a reasonable candidate. it is a super-heavy element, but within theoretical possibility.

element-115 has been part of UFO/SciFi lore before XCom. the theories differ as to where it's coming from: in theory, any element can be created artificially, but also occur naturally through fusion processes. so, element 115 might occur naturally within stars, or after a supernova, or perhaps (if it really is stable) somewhere in asteroids or on planets that have formed from matter that originated in a supernova, or perhaps after a neutron star collision, or whatever...

XCom only told us that element 115 "does not occur naturally within our solar system". I think the later games mentioned something about stockpiling of Elerium after the first UFO wars, and a global energy crisis that resulted from the dwindling supplies (because after the UFO wars, a lot of the technological breakthroughs were based on elerium technology).

so we can safely assume that the aliens need to ship it into our solar system from the outside (or perhaps they had large stores of it on mars, which were destroyed after the brain was killed).

Yes. The scientist were able to artificialy produce element 115 in the lab this year. No island of stability so far though.

I thought they found an extremely large stockpile on Mars a few thousand miles from Cydonia?

it's a waste product of the alien brain's biology. think kidney stones.

In one Xcom game they found a lot natural Elerium deposits in another solar system... XD
