Played around - now difficulty is through the roof

I appreciate all the effort that has gone into making this game playable on new hardware and enabling me to show my childhood game to my own children.

Onto the problem: I had openxcom installed and then decided to play around and installed OXCE and some mods and the difficulty now is through the roof.  As an example, on the beginner level on a brand new game there are landed ships and a terror site in the first month.  I don't recall anything that agressive until months in on lower levels of difficulty.  I couldn't figure it out so deleted everything I could find and now have reinstalled OXCE 8.0 (I'm on OSX with apple silicon) with no mods and nothing changed from the mods settings and it's still there.  Am I going crazy or is there some setting that has survived that I changed somewhere along the way?

This is completely normal.

There are two alien missions in January (alien research and alien terror), most of their UFOs land.
And there is a terror mission/site every month, including January, on all difficulties.

Nothing was changed.

It is normal in the original game, in openxcom, in OXCE and in every other version of the game.
