Advice on armor
« on: October 13, 2024, 10:12:58 am »
Looking for advice for armor. I’m sitting on a stockpile of elerium, alien electronics, synthmuscles and grav modules thanks to a muton/waspite invasion that kept my butchers engineers busy skinning aliens and breaking down sectopods and turrets for weeks.

Right now my crew is using mostly cyber armors and a mix of personal armors, power armors, Juggernaut suits looted from MIBs and Gillmen heroes.

I’m planning on building stormtrooper armor for my hybrid psi-squads. Nothing like flying on top on UFOs and mind controlling aliens inside the UFO using psi-vision.

However I’m not so sure for my non-psi grunts. I could go for the Juggernaut suits (I also have craploads of alien alloy and aqua plastics) for the insane damage reduction.
The Juggernaut suits saved my guys ass a couple of times when assaulting muton battleships. Took a plasma grenade hit without a scratch. And thet work underwater too. My only problem with them is that they look like my old TI-30 calculator.

On the other hand, those assault and prowler suits are damn sexy looking, and let me kick the aliens’ asses in style.

So what’s your take on this? If you can afford it, which armor do you go for and why?

Power suits and up are very decent at surviving plasma shots, except heavy or sniper. But in midgame and later, leaving your units open to fire is usually the worst idea no matter the armor, due to rockets, blasters and sectopods.  Psi-puppets make far better "armor", anyway. Also you can make your own cover by punching walls in base assaults.

Assuming land alien encounters and slow basic agents, I'd say using anything besides mobility armor, such as synthsuits / assault / stormtrooper / prowler makes little sense. The purpose of heavier armors is to be vanguard or to cover positioning mistakes of lighter units. Heavy agents suck at this, as they usually lag behind the contact or are too far away from oopsie they're supposed to cover.  This is HWPs's niche, as they're much faster. Advanced units such as spartans or infernals are also fast and thus can excel in whatever role/armor you'll give them.

In short - yeah, you can go fashion-xcomouls no problem.

I found Juggernaut suits on everyone worked very well on my last playthrough for the invasion, but that was with only using Spartans due to the high turn units making the penalty of -20 TU mostly ignorable. I tried giving Juggernaut suits to Kyberos and they could barely do anything in comparison so it might be less useful without high TU transformations.

I did a mix of prowler and juggernaut for my all-spartan crew.

Do NOT use stromtrooper, it will consistently die to a single plasma grenade thanks to having no under armor and resistances. I guess if you lame with psionics and never leave cover it works, but then you don't really need armor anyway.

And yes, juggernaut looks like ass. It's still the best armor in the game, sadly.
