Difficulty installing on Pop!_OS 22.04- but I think I'm close.

So a recent computer upgrade has meant I finally had to leave Windows 7 behind and make the trek to Linux, which has gone about as smoothly as you'd expect abandoning software you've been using since before the fall of the Soviet Union would.  But screw that, it's time for more X-Piratez... which requires OXCE now.  After much fumbling, I think I've almost got it, but:

it can't find my installation (as the "No X-COM installations found" message from running the appimage gets me), and I'm not sure where it's looking.  I can't find any "tmp/.mount_OpenXCJIOwQs" folder.

This may be, and I indeed hope it is, a simple, easy-to-fix error caused by me being a moron in Linux matters, but I don't know.  Help would be appreciated; I need my "bikini babes attacking office workers with chainsaws" fix.

Where you have original UFO game installed?
Beside for old version of OXCE there info how it should be setup to work correctly: https://openxcom.org/forum/index.php?topic=11817.0

Ah, okay; it needs to be in .local/share/openxcom.  I guess that actually WAS in the log; I just misunderstood it. 
Now it runs, cool- but it won't pick up X-Piratez in the modlist, and while regular OXC does, it tells me the "mod name is already in use", and this log:

It possible there is multiple XPZ mods some where. Another thing it possible you use obsolete version of XPZ too.

This is just trying to launch OXCE at all, by the way.  I thought those errors meant it couldn't handle .zip files, but there aren't any in that folder, or any subfolders.  What am I doing wrong?

/home/capitalsdammit/.local/share/openxcom/mods/unins000.msgwhat on earth you have in this directory? here you should have ONLY mods folders, not original game itself.

Best would be clean up every thing (lime move to different directory, not on list from log),  and place things where they belongs correctly.

But that goes back to my initial problem; it can't find the installation.  The log says

In my Linux installation, in ~/.local/share/openxcom I have UFO and TFTD subdirectories, which include the original games (with subdirectories).
~/.local/share/openxcom/ also includes 'mods' subdirectory, which includes only subdirectories (one per mod), no other files. You'll need to clean up this junk you have there.
There are also other subdirectories in ~/.local/share/openxcom/ (for saves) but I think the game creates those for you.

You've somehow managed to install the GOG version of UFO defense under the "~/.local/share/openxcom/mods" folder.

This is a location where the engine (e.g. openxcom) only expect user mods.
For the actual *required* data files it looks under "~/.local/share/openxcom/UFO" and/or "~/.local/share/openxcom/TFTD" (those are default locations which suffices for the majority of users).

Judging from this discussion the best advice I can give you is to run the following command in a terminal.

mv ~/.local/share/openxcom/mods/* ~/.local/share/openxcom/
This will move the contents of your current mod folder, which happens to contain the correct folders, to the main openxcom folder.

Yes ... this will leave you with a lot of (harmless) noise files in the openxcom folder but it should suffice to get a working version.
If necessary you can decide to clean up those noise files at some later time.

As for the remark in the first post (not being able to find the "tmp/.mount_OpenXCJIOwQs" folder).
This is to be expected. Due to the way AppImages work this 'folder' only exist while you're running the AppImage (e.g. play the game).
It is a folder that an user (e.g. someone that is only interested in playing the game) can safely ignore.
