[DONE][Suggestion] Key modifier for a unit to walk on max speed
« on: November 24, 2022, 02:06:24 pm »
Key modifier for a unit to walk on max speed.
During late game, when you have many soldiers on a map, sometimes it becomes tedious and time consuming to move them all. Right now I only speak about time spent on soldier's walking animation. I know, walking animation can be changed in settings, but it is also tedious (you must change it back later and, since this control is analog, you cant' be sure that you really set it exactly how it were before). I wish there were something similar to "SHIFT" modifier, when soldier move ignoring spotted enemies. I wish there were a key (for example "S" - speed), so that if you move a soldier while holding it, that soldier's walking animation would be in maximal speed.

OK, after 2 years I understood that this topic is in the wrong subforum.
Can we, please, move it to the right place and... evaluate possibilities to implement this?

There are only 3 modifier keys (shift, alt, ctrl) and they are all used already.

I can offer you a shortcut (let's say Ctrl+S), which changes the setting to max when pressed once and back to original when pressed again.
Would that be OK?

Hmm... I thought any key can be a modifier key if you wish hard enough...

Wow, this Ctrl+S setting is even better! But there has to be some sort of indicator for being in turbo mode and another hint to tell how to exit this mode if someone pressed those keys accidentally.

Other opinions are welcome! I think this feature will be beneficial to all players!

I don't know, I thought everybody just has max speed all the time.

At least I never had any reason to decrease the speed of xcom units.

From what I've seen, some have it on max speed, while others only have it set to high. I personally have it set on medium, because I often run, while at the same time watch carefully if a new enemy pops up. Gotta kill fast, and walking is too slow haha. But while running, I can't rely on auto-stop feature of walking.

Another possible option: While a unit is moving, pressing a key will start making it move at max speed

Your units moving at max speed might make it a little bit more difficult to interrupt movement if something unexpected happens. I may be completely misremembering things, but I think when running the game does not stop if it spots an enemy unit while when walking it does. So if you run some distances you need attention and good reflexes to stop your action movement if something bad happens. Also if the movement path ends up being different from the planned one and the unit would end up running into a proxy mine or some dangerous area.

But now I realize I'm using max player speed myself, with no apparent issues, so this is more of a conjecture..

Using max speed all the time is so immersion breaking... Everything looks so stupid. I only recently decided to increase soldiers speed slightly to give it a try. Does saves some time, indeed.

This situation with "ignore spotted enemy while running" is strange. In X-Com Files and in XPiratez it is how described. But in TWoTS+ you need to hold both Ctrl and Shift to ignore spotted enemies. I tried to find where that config is (because I really wanted the same behavior as in XCF) and found nothing. Mystery!

Apart from enemy spotting, sometimes it is important to "run exactly 1 tile". It is possible by running an immediately preventing movement by right clicking. Sometimes you just rotate using 0 TU.

I hope I am not the only one who values aesthetics of movement in X-COM.

As novice player, I prefer keep movement speed slider around a middle. So such key definitely will be handy.

Speaking about "auto-stop feature when walking" btw I found it very annoying then whole bunch of units after first still breaks on same enemy.

Shift+move prevents stopping on seeing enemy.
