Keeps crashing!
« on: March 27, 2022, 08:36:33 pm »
I am playing openxcom with no mods enabled and I keep getting openxcom has crashed segmentation fault. How can I troubleshoot this so that I can continue with my game? Thanks.

You can upload the log file for us to analyze.

You can also upload a save file if the crash is reproducible.

The log wasn't too helpful unfortunately.

What steps should I do after loading the game to make it crash?

Once the game loads, you are in the geoscape. Fast forward 5 mins and it will pickup a ufo. If you intercept or cancel the ufo then within seconds it will crash after that. Thanks.

I tried several times, but it doesn't crash for me.

I suspect that it can be an issue with the original game data files, a missing or corrupted sound effect for example.
Do you have the original data files from a reliable source (e.g. Steam or gog.com) or from somewhere else?

Yeah it is on steam. I reverified the files and it found some bad files and redownloaded them and then I reinstalled openxcom pulling from the xcom directory with the known good files but it still crashes. This worked really well for a few weeks until it started crashing. It even crashes for me on my laptop which I used to test it to make sure it wasn't my PC causing it.

I think I may have found it. It's the allow psi strength improvement option. Whenever I enable it is when it crashes. I have all the psi options checked and the one that is crashing the game is that one.

That option can't cause a crash, at least not directly.
However it does use RNG, so when it is turned on you get different RNG on other things, which could cause a crash.

I still can't make it crash on my PC though.
Could you please configure the options again so that the game crashes; and then zip everything (including the game, the data, the config, the save, etc.) and upload it all here, so that I have files identical to yours?

Does the game crash exactly at midnight (game time)? Or at some other time?
