I'm pretty damn sure that in vanilla, they'd target your entire team as soon as they saw any member of your team.

I haven't tested OpenXcom extensively yet, but it seems to be similar, with the psi attacks happening far behind the front line against soldiers I thought weren't spotted.

I'm really torn here - turning on psi line of sight basically removes enemy psi from the game (They choose to fire their weapons over using psi, I guess), and keeping it off means I have very little defense against psi and must resort to cheap tactics to work against it.

True. You guys make good points.

I just come up with these ideas post them here but I like that everyone is engaged giving lots of points. This is not about making OpenXCom like EU2012 but improving OpenXCom using lore friendly mechanics. Some ideas may work some may not :)
Think about it. You had an idea. A good idea. An idea that is so good that it is, effectively, already implemented.
You just failed to realize how it was already implemented, that's not a big deal.
So thanks for your idea.

So, shortly put, OpenXcom has a strong flanking mechanic where you do additional damage (And considerable amounts of it, considering how armor works) against flanked enemies, and an enemy you are currently flanking will not shoot you for dancing in his face.

Sounds like a pretty solid flanking mechanic.

Nice update, good work on those ethereals.

I've found that turning psi line of sight on means that aliens basically never use psi. Though my own experience with it is kinda lacking too.

It's probably still the scout drone, that thing crashes my base defense missions too.
(Despite otherwise working fine and being a nice little tool.)

Here's what I observed.

The chance to hit is an estimate on the low side. Your actual chance to hit is larger.
The game (I assume) first rolls to hit the target.
If it hits, it hits.
If it misses, the game then determines where the miss goes. The game basically creates a cone in front of your unit and determines where in the cone the shot goes. The larger your original hit percentage, the narrower the cone is.
The shot can veer off course up and down and left and right.
The shot then flies from the gun until it hits something or leaves the map. It can hit it's original target or something else in it's path.

So if you try to shoot at something right next to you, that unit probably is in the 'miss cone' anyway, so you'll hit anyway.

It is also a bad idea to take low-chance shots if your own units are in the vicinity.

Note: This is based on my own observations of the game, so I may be completely wrong.

I think it's fine that armor doesn't work against flame throwers. Especially alien armor, which is mostly hardened skin.
