Some good games from the 90s
« on: November 17, 2012, 07:57:47 am »
I was wondering if you guys could recommend some games from the 90s (Besides X-COM).

I was thinking about downloading Alpha Centauri and such.. But, I'd like all of your input before I start downloading all these games and they turn out to blow.

You didnt specify a Genre.
Ultima Underworld,
dungeon keeper 2
theme hospital
Master of Orion,
heroes of might and magic 3,
Baulders Gate,
Warcraft ,
thunderscape,
daggerfall,
Civ 2 ( Fantastic worlds expansion - xcom maps),
Diablo,
Jagged alliance 2,
Cannon Fodder
KKND,
Comman and conquer.

Alpha Centauri is one of my all time favourite games, just be warned it can take some time to get into it. I was a Veteran Civ player when i found Alpha centauri , i gave it a 30min run after buying it and did not like it. 12months later i was board and started reading the booklet that came with it, so i decided to give it another go, since then i have been in love with that game.

Role-Playing, Strategy, Action.. Pretty much everything that isn't text-based.

I've played Command and Conquer, Diablo I & II LoD, Age of Empires I & II, and Starcraft.

Planescape: Torment

FPSRPG:
Deus Ex
System Shock 2

Vehicle simulation:
Mechwarrior 2

Wing Commander series

Real Time Strat:
Homeworld
Starcraft

Real Time Tactical:

Add these to the list:

System Shock (a lot better than 2)
Anachronox
Wing Commander Privateer
Traders - The Intergalactic Trading Game
Pirates! Gold
Jagged Alliance
Master of Orion 2 (the best part, avoid 3 at all cost)
Beneath a Steel Sky
Most Lucas Arts adventures
Gobliiins 1-3
One Must Fall 2097
Warlords II
Ultima Underworld 2
Ultima 7 part 2 Serpent Isle
D/Generation
DSA 3 - Schatten über Riva (in german  ;) )
Battle Isle 2
Historyline: 1914–1918
Al-Qadim: The Genie's Curse

But if I had to pick:
Grim Fandango for Adventures.
Anachronox for RPG.
System Shock for FP-something.
Master of Magic for round based strategy.
Starcraft: Broodwars for RTS.

I only listed PC games.
Some games from that list were remade/cloned or have a new engine or something.
Some are even availible for free legaly like "Beneath a Steel Sky", take a look at scummvm.

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys! This might take a while to sort out which ones to try out and play, they all seem great.

system shock 1 definitely belongs on the list, there's no disputing that.

but saying it was better than 2 is just... well, it's wrong.
it's like saying alien was better than aliens, they just don't compare.
one was a horror/suspense/thriller the other was an action movie, and i feel the same can be said for the system shock franchise.

shock 1 was definitely better in certain aspects, but shock 2 was better in other areas, like the combat for example. it felt kind of clunky and a bit bad in shock 1, but it flowed better in 2.
the storytelling and atmosphere was better in 1, i was legitimately scared running through that game the first time. in shock 2 it was less... pervasive, the atmosphere and storytelling were still THERE, but i didn't feel like i was going to crap myself every time i turned a corner. or more precisely, i WAS crapping myself, but for different REASONS. it wasn't that i was scared of the situation or what might happen next, i was afraid of meeting up with something that was way too powerful for me to really take on.

plus, shock 2 had co-op.

i do, however, agree wholeheartedly that MOO2 was the best one in THAT series.

also: oh god, d/generation, that game was freaking amazing.

Well I was somewhat disapointed in system shock 2. Can't realy remember why exactly, maybe it just could not live up to my expectations at the time. And yes story is very important for me in such a game. I have not played either for a few years and can not remember the details.

I played Homeworld and I loved it! Thank you for that game recommendation!
I also played Alpha Centauri, but I had issues with Alien Crossfire not wanting to start. (Still loved the original, though)
The next few games I'll play are System Shock 2 and Deus Ex after I finish up Dungeon Keeper 2.
