Starting problems: STR_HUMAN_SONIC_SHOTGUN
« on: December 30, 2019, 02:24:04 pm »
I installed OpenXCom nightly (25th Dec 2019) on Debian 10.

I tried to find the XComFiles Mod. There is no main-info-download-thread on the first-page of the xcomfiles-mod-sub-forum. so I used the "mod-protal" at https://openxcom.mod.io/ . Was this the rigth download area?

There are 3 folders in the zip archiv. I activted only the xcomfiles mod nothing else. And no other foreign mod. Openxcom restarts then and give me that error message
Weapon STR_HUMAN_SONIC_SHOTGUN has clip size 0 and no ammo defined. Please use 'clipSize: -1' for unlimited ammo, or allocate a compatibleAmmo item.

So what can I do?

This is the full log:

XcomFiles requires OpenXcom Extended: https://openxcom.org/forum/index.php/topic,5258.0.html

(You should have received a warning when you activated the mod.)

You're confusing OXC and OXCE!

1. OG = original game, i.e. X-COM: UFO Defense / X-COM: Terror from the Deep (by Microprose)
2. OXC = OpenXcom (nightly by SupSuper & Warboy)
3. OXCE = OpenXcom Extended (by Yankes)
4. OXCE+ = OpenXcom Extended+ (by Meridian)

(OXCE) + (OXCE+) = OXCE

I have compiled the OXCE from the https://github.com/MeridianOXC/OpenXcom.git, and I am still getting the same error.  What could be going wrong?  Is there some additional data that needs to installed?

In my case, I did a manual install along the lines of

install -m 755 $BUILD_DIR/bin/openxcom /usr/local/bin/
cp -r $BUILD_DIR/{standard,common} ~/.local/share/openxcom/
cp -r $HIDDEN_TREASURE/{TFTD,UFO} ~/.local/share/openxcom/

UPDATE I think, I might have found the root of the problem.  The master branch of the aforementioned git repository contains a vanilla version of the game.  I used that branch in connection with the issue discussed at https://openxcom.org/forum/index.php/topic,11190.0.html.

@Meridian Frankly, this is a bit misleading.  Perhaps, a policy of branch naming should be reconsidered?  Maybe, a file with release id should also be placed in the root of the repository.  Nothing more sophisticated than a VERSION with a basic description string is necessary.  Maybe first paragraph in README could mentioned something about being a vanilla version, and not an extended one.

Is this a mod issue or an issue with OXCE and the repository? Might want to post this in the OXCE subforum instead.

Thank you; this is a good idea.

I would say this is a release engineering / code organization issue.  I actually posted in the OXCE dev section.

The 'master' branch contains the latest OXC.

The naming is fine in my opinion, OXC is a "master mod" for OXCE :) And I can't rename it anyway (I think?).

I also cannot add any files to the master branch, because then it wouldn't be a 100% copy of OXC and the merge history would start to look absolutely awful from the moment I add a first non-OXC commit. Already tried that some years ago, we really don't want that.

The 'oxce-plus' branch is the one you need, and it is also the default branch... you get it automatically when you first download the repo. No need to switch branches, it's ready to go.

The name of the repository is OXCE, and the general convention to have master branch refer to the project's current development state.  In case of OXCE, it should have been OXCE's current development state, not OXC's.

You may create a branch for OXC.  The issue is not the presence of a branch dedicated to OXC, but rather its name.

The merge history would not really look any different if branches are named differently.

Having the same issue.

A naive user can do the following and it won't work:

1. Google "the x-com files"
2. Click top result
3. Click top thread
4. Click "Get mod here"
5. Click on the listed dependency
6. Open the forum link per the instructions
7. download and run openxcom_extended_v7.9.6-win64.exe
8. download openxcom_xfiles_2.9-9vuz.zip
9. Place the open xcom files in the location stated in the readme.
10. Have it not work with the above mentioned error

My opinion is that something is clearly disorganized when a very reasonable attempt to follow instructions doesn't work.

Sorry, but if you did exactly what you wrote and nothing else, it is literally impossible to get that same error.

Either you did something more or something less.
