TV Tropes
« on: June 22, 2018, 08:16:56 pm »
tvtropes.org is a wiki about TV programs, films, books, animation, video games and such. I saw there a page about Piratez and decided that X-COM Files needs a page too. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/VideoGame/TheXCOMFiles

I don't have time to keep it up to date. Besides, their misguided war on adblockers makes editing more time-consuming. And Solarius finds it inappropriate for an authour to work on it... much. So, I invite you, other players, to correct the things that changed since 0.8 and things that I forgot or got wrong.

Could have tried All the Tropes. https://allthetropes.org/wiki/Main_Page

But now legally you can't just copy the TV Tropes stuff over the All the Tropes, because they use different licenses . . . but TV Tropes still will try to make the claim it belongs to you, and that's why it can't be copied . . . even by you.

So far, only 2 users edited it: I and Solarius. I hereby grant anybody the right to copy what I wrote in this article to any site. Solarius probably will too. Even if he doesn't, his edits stand out — he starts links to other tropes with "Main/" .

Yeah, sure I give my permission.
And I link to general trope articles with Main as I believe this is the standard. I updated some other entries too.
This schism is pretty interesting... Are there any concrete examples of censorship on TV Tropes? I am only aware of deletion of articles on Lotte no Omocha and Kodomo Jikan, which admittedly was pretty fishy.

I don't know much of the drama behind, but yeah, TV Tropes became sellouts. Worse, they complain if you have an Ad-blocker and annoy you to no end to disable it.

Disgusting.

I only know of deleting stuff their hoster would not approve of. This included every mention of "hentai". Reposting the deleted paragraphs with the word "erotic" instead of "hentai" was OK, somehow. The only deleted article I can recall offhand is pornographic text game Corruption of Champions (fetish-heavy heroic fantasy RPG, google at your own risk).

Googled Lotte no Omocha and Kodomo Jikan. Yes, the possibility of underage sex should be a problem :) Wikipedia has no problems with them, though.

They did away with Naughty Tentacles, mostly it was merged with the other tentacle based articles, I believe.  Many other topics they found a decent description and locked them, no examples, a relatively benign example being Panty Shot.  They did have articles on adult games, I remember Rance and his 'Hyper Weapon'.  Go on, guess what the Hyper Weapon is...

Edit

It was all horribly inappropriate and politically incorrect, but adult media has tropes too.

Edit part 2

I don't know why that was what I remembered specifically, incidentally.

Very compelling. Especially since I can't see how any of these are "horribly inappropriate", unless you bring it up in kindergarten or at a funeral.
American internet is weird. It tends to spawn ambitious projects and then willingly decapitate them. I just don't get it.
So how is the status of All The Trppes? Does it contain the bulk  of the data from TV Tropes?

I'd wager that the handling of...sensitive...topics is highly dependant on the company you're hosting your stuff at and how reliant you are on advertisements. Also, the more mainstream visitors your site attracts the more mainstream your content is going to be.

My big problem is that as far as I can tell, TVtropes isn't reliant on advertising, it's paid for by patreon.  But they have to justify the censorship, so adblocking is anathema, since ad companies were why the censorship was implemented at all.

Incidentally, that game I mentioned?  The main character, in ANY other game, would be among the most depraved villains.  Things he's not willing to do to satisfy his desires are few and far between, but ironclad.  There's a side character who is basically the traditional RPG hero, he's just happens to be an idiot.

All the Tropes does contain more, and is on a more open license. In fact, when they first forked they had a lot of articles copied straight from TV Tropes. In fact right on the main page of All the Tropes is a link to why they forked, and among the issues that a lot of the regulars at All the Tropes have that cemented them going there was shortly after the fork, TV Tropes changed the license they operated under. All the Tropes agreed to remove anything from their site that was copied over from after the license change, and one of the TV Tropes mods came to the discussion section of All the Tropes to complain that All the Tropes was still stealing articles rather than writing whole new to begin with . . . despite the fact that the old license was designed specifically to accommodate this copying, with proper attribution. All the Tropes uses the exactly same license type that Wiki Commons uses, TV Tropes now uses a more restrictive variant.

I haven't actually looked much at TV Tropes personally, so I can't say too much about them, but the only censorship I can tell is going on at All the Tropes is that they don't allow actual depiction of widely illegal acts, and no actual pornography. But what few things I have checked across both sites, All the Tropes seems to have more written about them, which is why I haven't gone to TV Tropes much at all.

As I said, US internet is weird as hell. (Ads having influence on the content is pure LSD trip in itself.)

So, how are we going about moving the X-Com Files article to All the Tropes? (And Piratez too, I guess). It's the first time I'm hearing about ATT, so I'd rather leave it to someone else.

Well, that's the thing, even taking the risk (which in real-life there's not much of) of them making any effective fuss over a wholesale copying of everything from TVT to ATT, there's then the issue of someone having to actually redo the links to other trope articles. Someone with the patience is basically going to have to do some copying and redoing links entirely. Of course with this, some rewriting becomes necessary, which will help circumvent the already low chances of TVT mods doing more than whining that content is being copied. I have to admit . . . I'm not one of those with patience to do it, or else I'd have started to do it myself already.

I assume the engine is the same; so why would there be much work? I can imagine one or two articles may be missing or have a different name, but is there a systemic problem?

I actually don't like the setup for All The Tropes, it just doesn't work for me. If  you don't have anything that trips the boobytraps in TVtropes, it's still good, though you have to deal with disruptive moderators and such, but that's most anywhere now.  :(

As I understand the Ad thing, Google was threatening to cut ad service, and possibly make TVtropes harder to find through google, though I'm pretty sure that's actually illegal, so maybe I'm making that bit up.  They tried separating the 'family friendly' stuff from the adult stuff, with different ad services for both and login requirements for the adult stuff, and then a few months later, everything exploded and they had a purge.  Lolita and a few other things only survived because they have historical value, but I think they had to be restored due to the purge.

I stopped being happy with the site at that time, but the other options were not very well set up as far as I can tell, and as long as I avoid the policy makers, it's still usable, mostly.
