How do I install a mod?
« on: September 23, 2017, 06:06:29 pm »
Hi where exactly do I extract a mod? I extracted it everywhere but it still doesn't show up. I tried installing these: http://www.openxcom.com/mod/alternative-smoke http://www.openxcom.com/mod/cooper-039-s-smoke. None of these seem to work. Also does it activate automatically or does it show up in the game in the mods menu?

Locations i've tried:

OpenXcomFolder\data\
OpenXcomFolder\data\SeparateFolderForMod\
C:\Users\__user__\Documents\OpenXcom\
C:\Users\__user__\Documents\OpenXcom\mods\
C:\Users\__user__\Documents\OpenXcom\mods\SeparateFolderForMod
C:\Users\__user__\Documents\OpenXcom\SeparateFolderForMod

I'm using Openxcom 1.0. Not nightly

That doesn't work on 1.0...

If you want to use mods, most everybody around here will say to uninstall 1.0 and install the nightly instead, as the modding support is years ahead of 1.0. If you want to use the milestone, look up the install instructions for the Awesome Guns mod, it was made for 1.0 and may help you with making Cooper's smoke work.

Solar, he declared he is using the milestone version of the game.
In order to properly install a mod, you must use the nightlies, uninstall the 1.0.
Then, you can follow the directory solar had shown you

For the most part, I think so? I don't think enough has changed in the data structures in the unmodded game that is would not be compatible. Make a backup just in case :)

They should be... 99% sure.

There is always a small chance you will get some unexpected error, but in that case you can just ask someone (for example me) to fix it for you.

Ok, nvm, I copied the saves from C:\Users\__username__\Documents\OpenXcom to C:\Users\__username__\Documents\OpenXcom\xcom1. I was reaaally scared for a moment! Also I copied the mod to C:\Users\__username__\Documents\OpenXcom\mods\CoopersSmoke. Now it works. Thanks.

Sorry, I totally forgot there are still people using 1.0. I forgot 1.0 even existed. :P
