OK, I've read (and tried to understand) the suggested documents. I haven't programmed anything since Sinclair Basic so the process is not perfect :)

A question that is not related my previous ideas.

A grenade is disposable, right? By disposable, I mean that once it explodes, it is gone from the game.

Does the engine allow for a disposable gun/melee weapon, a weapon that acts normally for one use but is removed from the game when it is used? I am looking at the docs and cannot read anything that says it cannot exist within the engine.

Yes, you can make items that disappear when used up - ammo items already do this.  If you define an ammo count on the weapon itself instead of giving it ammo items, the weapon disappears when used up.  Dioxine did this to make Panzerfausts a single-use rocket launcher.  Not sure about melee weapons, but I think they also can disappear - I think the short bamboo combat stick does eventually break.

I failed to make a melee weapon with a clip with limited charges... There are weird effects, up to CTD.
I didn't try setting it on the weapon itself, but I do not expect anything better.

I'm willing to have a go at making something. Don't expect a huge deal or anything anytime soon :)

Once you've programmed an item and inserted it into Openxcom, how do you test that it works?

Try a new battle - all possible battlescape items are available to load on your craft there.
