Battlescape freezes. (solved).
« on: June 01, 2015, 04:36:57 pm »
Hi guys I have a problem.

It all started a while ago, while I was in the middle of my Piratez mod campaign. I dont know what exactly happened, from a specific point onwards, every time I started a battlescape operation with a specific faction, namely the traders the game just crashed. Everything else works fine, as long as there are no troops present from that specific faction. I tried to uninstall/reinstall the game (about 30 times) and the mod to no avail, the problem kept going on.

Since a solution didnt present itself, I called it quits and uninstalled it completely (both the game and the mod) in frustation. Now yesterday I tried to fire up a vanilla x-com campaign to beat up on my boredom with the FMP and....As soon as I hit the ground the battlescape crashed again. Naturally I dissabled the mod, nothing. I reinstalled the game and tried without the mod and again nothing. After another cycle of installs/uninstalls I remembered my problem with pirates. So I downloaded the April nightly and launched Piratez to check. And yeah all worked ok in there, I could fight with other factions, but as soon as I entered in a battle against traders the battlescape crashes.

My deduction, seems to be that there must be something wrong with the sprites of the X-Com units (the traders use those in Piratez). However logic dectates that with uninstalling the game this would be fixed correct? Especially since the vanilla game was installed with the latest nightly, and the Piratez on the Aprils nightly.

Does anyone have any kind of idea what might the case be? I cannot not do a game on either nightly both vanilla and moded.

Heres a save test for anyone interested (this is under the new nightly). Just land the skyranger.

Thanks.

I tried the milestone version too just to see what happens. Same problem.

Doesnt anyone have any guesses at what might be the issue?

Your save downloads and runs fine for me with the latest nightly.

When you say you reinstalled the game, did you copy your original xcom files from the same place? Is it possible something happened to them?

Thanks for taking the time.

I deleted everything (even did a search) and recopied the files and redownloaded the openxcom files. More than 30 times.
I am copying them  from my Gold edition CD.
Does the game have any kind of log/error files that I can check? Or a debug mode?
From what I deducted it must be a problem regarding the xcom sprites.

Hmm, not sure what else to suggest. I use the files from my steam install (dos version) but I doubt that should make any different.

OpenXcom does produce a log file, It's called openxcom.log and is produced in the same folder as your save games. There is also a debug mode as described here https://www.ufopaedia.org/index.php?title=Hidden_Features_%28OpenXcom%29 but I dont think it makes error output any more clear, but it might be worth a try to see if you can find out what is going on.

FudgeDragon, thanks a lot man.

I run through the log file, and I identified the problem (sort off). I dont know why or how, but it sees the XCOM named files in the Units folder as corrupted from my Gold edition. Although it beats me why, I installed the old dos version from the floppies using dosbox and copied those files to my installation. And well it worked.

Meanwhile the laptop runs the game from the Gold edition CD with and the nightly without problems....

Thanks again m8.

Hmm odd. Odd that it only started doing it recently too. A scratch on the disk that your laptop is more tolerant to than your pc perhaps?

Either way good to hear that you've got it working.

Dunno what it might be, but it certainly got me wondering. I have 3 PCs (from friends) more to victimize so Ill check it out.
