Sound completely gone
« on: January 25, 2015, 05:37:36 pm »
Can't hear any audio from OpenXCom, mod or no mod. Reinstalled game several times, no effect.
OpenXCom sound options look like this:

Windows sound options look like this:

Windows 7(x64)
OpenXCom 1.0 with the latest nightly to date(built 2015-01-23 13:08).

First of all, don't use 32000, nor 48000 samplerate.
Second, you should not reinstall OpenXcom, it doesnt't make much sense. Most of problems are often caused by some wrong values in the options.cfg.
Make a backup copy, and remove this file.

Thank you. Changing samplerate to 22050 helped. Strange, i thought i already tried to fiddle with this one.  :-\

Da faq! Got "no sound" bug again. Now i nailed the reason - if you get music volume in game all the way to 0 it also mutes everything else, and gets OpenXCom volume in windows mixer to 0. And turning it back up in windows mixer doesn't get it back, you need to actually put music back on, which i don't want because i don't like it, and rather play my AIMP.

P.S.
Fiddled with sound options some more. If i drag music volume to zero and then SFX volume to max then i still get sound. But i also get the music, which is stupid.
options.cfg sais:
Quote
soundVolume: 128
 musicVolume: 0
aaaand, after restart sound disappears completely again.

Don't use Auto. Use Either adlib, or ogg type. if it accidentally try to play MIDI, it will screw system volume.

Changing music format option doesn't help. It still insists on playing MIDI. I guess i need actual music files in a different format as well?

adlib works with ADLIB.CAT in your SOUND/ folder, midi uses GM.CAT, ogg uses a bunch of loose files.

you should be able to remove or rename GM.CAT with no negative repercussions, just to rule it out entirely.

There is no way full DOS version doesn't have adlib music files. It's not complete version then. It's contained in officially diistributed 1.4 patch.
https://www.strategycore.co.uk/files/ufo-1.4/
Just take SOUBD\ADLIB.CAT from there.

Thanks, it worked. Had to swith to MIDI to get my sound and music back, and then to Adlib to be able to shut down music while retaining sound, but it worked.

Gagh! Now game seems to crash from time to time. Guess i'm missing some other sound or music file. Is there any way to make the game log why does it stops working?

In midi mode volume slider simply changed total volume bar in windows. All you needed - is to be more careful in looking into volume controls of OS.
About crashes. Recommending to entirely reinstall vanilla, since it looks like you have damaged game, lacking of many files. Not only sound.

Don't think so. Reverting back to MIDI fixed crashing completely, so it seems like i do miss some of the audio files needed to run separate music and sfx.

What do you mean by "Don't think so"?
I said, it's lack of many game files you have. Reinstall proper vanilla package of 1.4 version.
