Recording Xcom with OBS?
« on: December 05, 2014, 09:17:26 am »
Just wondering, if anyone's used OBS to record or stream X-COM, what settings did you use? I fiddle and tweak, but I keep pulling up a blank screen in the recordings.

Gotcha. What's the best filter to use to stick to the original Xcom look? Pixellate?

I was able to record xcom ew in obs by setting xcom to windowed mode then using obs to record it as a window, rather than recording as a game.

You have two options. The first is to use the game capture plug in and set the filter to *raw. That will work fine but it will cause the game to lag. The lag is comparable to the original lag.

The best set up is to use monitor capture, then set the resolution to the same resolution you set in game, then edit the scene and make sure everything fits. Then once your happy with it you can ALT - Enter to go into full screen mode.

The quality is pretty good at 1280X720 on full screen (at least for my monitor which is normally set for 1080p)

I like using *Raw but you can play around with the filters and see one that you like that also doesn't lag the game terribly.

The reason your getting a black screen is because some of those filters don't allow recording. There are other ones that work but I think raw gives you the least amount of lag with the game capture plug in. Otherwise, if you don't want any lag at all then use monitor capture.

I use OBS as well, and I find it easiest to use the "window capture".  It seems to work the easiest and have the least recording issues.

Here's a pretty good tutorial on OBS if anyone else is interested in figuring it out...

Lol, I was intimidated by it at first, so I used Xsplit.   My frugalness overcame me though so I forced myself to play with it until I knew what I was doing :)

Hilarious pic.  That should be the graph for learning programming editors with VIM in place of OBS :)

VIM guy here, btw.

and this pic is wrong :> Hardest to learn should be on the bottom of graph.
If you read it you see that in OBS after couple of trials you know everything. More faster it grown it easer to learn.
"steep learning curve" is misnomer. flat is hardest because you don't grain anything after most of trials.

Only thing you can say about OBS on this graph that after initial enlightenment that give you all knowledge you don't grain anything.

the Y axis should be "recording knowledge" because FRAPS doesn't teach you jack shit about recording.
