Palettes?
« on: October 19, 2014, 08:12:52 am »
Hi! I'm no programmer or much of a modder or anything. I do have a question, though - if openXcom code is rebuilt from scratch, rather than adapted from the original, how come there are still the original palette limitations?

This isn't criticism - like I said, not much by way of coding knowledge - I'm just curious, in case anyone has a layman-friendly explanation.

i dont speak for the devs but the palette was not "just" a limitation but also a tool
things like different shades / haircolors or the interceptorwindow "radar" are color shifts within the palette/image

openxcom still uses original data from XCOM, where images are 'pictures' with indexed colors. So what where comes palettes.

This thread (https://openxcom.org/forum/index.php?topic=1557.15) has the most useful info on pallets I could find.

The color pallets in game are internal, the game only cares about the index numbers you are drawing with, not the color your photo-editing program is showing you.
