Game crashes at the end of March 2001
« on: October 10, 2013, 05:23:01 am »
Hello,

I've been playing OpenXcom (latest stable version, Windows 7) and the game crashes at the moment when it's supposed to change from March 31st to April 1st, 2001. The "OpenXcom has stopped working" popup appears. It first happened when I was playing on Superhuman difficulty. I loaded an old save from a different playthrough on Beginner difficulty, coasted through until March 31st, and it also crashed, so it wasn't something specific that I did during the Superhuman game.

I searched around but this doesn't seem to be a documented error, so I'm guessing that others are not having the same problem.

Any ideas as to why this may be?

Thanks!

Diego

What version of OpenXcom are you playing?

Version 0.9. The first line of CHANGELOG.txt says "Version 0.9 (07-05-2013)".

if (it's the 0.9 "stable" release)
{
    that's 99.99% likely to be the problem.
    it's probably the old "alien mission in an invalid zone" bug that was fixed quite some time back.
    if (you haven't already)
    {
        grab the latest git build from the downloads page.
    }
}
else
{
    please upload your save file either here or on the bug tracker.
}

There's also this: https://openxcom.org/index.php/bug-tracker/.

And by that I mean the TEXT on that page, which includes this:

Quote
  • You checked if the bug hasn’t already been reported by someone else or fixed in a nightly build.

as far as I remember, there had been some kind of issue with research completion crashing the game... that might be the problem in your case. so, to repeat the most important thing that's already been said, go grab the latest nightly build.

otherwise you'll be missing out on a ton of new stuff, and you'll be suffering from crashes that were fixed long ago.

of course, you might then be suffering from new crashes, but hey, since you already started into the reporting bugs business somehow... ;)

Yep. Grab the latest build, see if it happens with it too...

Sadly, the latest build will not work with your saved games, so... read the next paragraph

Better yet, pause your research on the current build and see if the game crashes at the same date.

Hello all, and than you for your answers.

I just downloaded the latest nightly build (OpenXcom 0.9 git 2013-10-10 14:15) and the problem persists. At least now it's giving a more informative error. I'm attaching a screen capture. Clicking "Retry" crashes with the "OpenXcom has stopped working" popup. Either of the other options just closes the game.

There is no research going on at the time. In fact, there's nothing going on, no research, no manufacturing, no base facilities being built... I'm just idling in the globalscape.

kkmic mentioned that my savegames wouldn't work with the new version, but I can open them fine. I don't know if that can be a problem in itself, and if I should start a new game from scratch in order to test it, but it can take quite a while to get to April 2001 from a new game.

Thanks again.

Either of these two will crash at the exact moment when the date is supposed to change. I don't have any other playthroughs saved, so basically all my saved games will crash at this date, it's nothing specific to these two.

it's the alien mission in an invalid zone bug, just as i suspected.

solution: start a new game.
it IS possible to copy/paste the alien strategy data from the new save to the old save, but i'm not sure how well that'll go.

Bummer. Oh well, I had the aliens completely dominated anyway, I guess I could use the challenge of starting over.

I'll let you know if it crashes again once I get to April 2001 in the new game, although that will take a while.

Thanks!
