I loved the gameplay in Apocalypse. The pausable RTS really allowed the game to feel like a true tactical strategy game. Setting up simultaneous breaches into rooms/buildings/ufo's felt amazing . However the game was rushed in development and the 60's/70's style artwork wasn't great for me. The cityscape vehicle fighting was great, all that collateral damage really enhanced the game, it's great seeing the random gang-wars or police trying to help take down UFO's

I would really love to see a remake of Apocalypse with more work being done into the politics, infact I already have an idea of a game based on Apoc where instead of a specialised task force to counter-act the alien menace it's put as an open bounty by the government so different corporations can try and take down the aliens but they can choose to work together or against each other and maybe multiplayer as well as replayabilty by choosing different corporations to start with etc...

It's a very nascent idea and quite possibly a pipe dream but I really want to work on it and see it happen.

I liked TFTD in general, it had what X-COM1 had with new aliens, new music, new tilesets, and a whole new game to explore basically. In a lot of ways it was like reliving the first game again but with an easier time learning it.

Unfortunately TFTD had a much more serious case of broken parts.
-broken research tree that it was nearly impossible to get through without cheating or knowing all the ins and outs.
-giant multi-stage maps with very serious 'last alien' issues.
-Broken difficulty (beginner was high difficulty, superhuman actually was impossible because you wouldn't detect any UFOs.)
-Generally more infuriating bugs, although the original had quite a few of those too.

One particular issue I had with TFTD however were the absurd technologies from a lore perspective. Psionics made sense to me on some level but Molecular Control? That's Absurd! Sonic Guns? Ultrasonic Grenades? Thermal Blades that work under water? Gauss weapons that work under water? Alien alloys don't work under water but plastic does?

I really got into Interceptor, it was very silly and campy. Clearly I'm not a good example of an X-COM fan. :P
I would have liked interceptor and I liked as much of it as I could get to. It was an example of perfectly decent X-COM and terrible flight-sim, especially if you tried to fly with a mouse.

It's a love-hate relationship. :P

On the love side, it feels more stylish and polished. The new plot, even if really contrived, made for a great atmosphere and it really shows they put real effort into remaking all the assets. New haunting music, new art style, cooler UFOpaedia, bigger and more varied maps, fixing and adding a bunch of little improvements (right-click doors etc), and so forth. They were clearly going for a "bigger and beefier UFO", and I find it more replayable for that.

On the hate side, the gameplay. I mean overall it's exactly the same as the original, and in that regard it's fine, but it feels all the stuff they did change was feedback taken "too literally", if you think about it. Explosive weapons too cheap? Let's restrict them! Laser weapons too easy? Let's give them ammo! Plasma weapons too powerful? Get rid of their auto shot! Small repetitive maps? Let's make them much bigger detailed multi-level ordeals! Half the tech tree is useless and easy to rush? Let's add a lot more intricate requirements requiring live alien captures and what not. Etc. This all probably sounded great on paper, but without a proper QA (a myth in the 90s) to put it through its paces, it actually turned out much worse, specially with all the crippling bugs that came with it too, and ended up overshadowing the good parts by far.

But I can't fault them too much for it, they clearly meant well, it's still sorta fun, and it's kinda my guilty pleasure. :P
+1
Nailed it!

I never liked the underwater setting of TFTD. That broke it for me. Did play it for some time, but I just didn't get into it.

All the later games, well.. I played a bit of Apocalypse (like 2 missions) before I was completely sure it wasn't for me. Then I lost all faith in the sequels.

Once in a while I will look at some screenshots from the newest sequel before shrugging and saying "meh". It's a dead franchise as I see it.

TFTD was the first one i had, really cool, but it was so difficult to advance. i was lost in the techs cause i didn't know that i had to get a live commander of a ship to get to the final missions...then i bought apocalypse later, i didnt like it at all, i played less than 20hours.
