Geoscape Fog of War
« on: September 06, 2013, 10:18:48 pm »
At creation of beginning base the radar range clears fog of war around the area. All other areas of Earth are covered with thick clouds + semi-transparent darkness indicating XCOM knows NOTHING what transpires there.

Patrolling craft clears fog of war temporarily as long as lingering in remote areas.

Seeing radar ranges fills basically the same gameplay function, mind.

turning this into a FOW graphically is something that might be considered if we ever turn the geoscape into a true 3D-rendered or openGL globe, though... for now, it is impossible (and probably not necessary, like Align said :) )

I once create something like that when I try do radars ranges but its was all scraped because Volutar solution for radars was faster and look better.

Make it a darkish scary cloudy FOW and I'll take it  :)

Imagine the foreboding, dark world of Twilight Zone. Alien incursion increased generation of storm clouds, which acquired a dim, murky color tone toward black.  There is still plenty of sunlight, only a lot more foreboding storms.

Earth from above looks like a ghastly Fog of War. However where the light of XCOM penetrates  - successful missions - the clouds seem to clear and the lands enjoy the sunshine.  Where XCOM loses a base, Twilight Clouds reappear.

Also UFO-s are mostly seen coming out of the darkest clouds what often looks like a nasty hurricane with plenty of lightning storms in the center, A'la Final Countdown.
