Best way to play TFTD

Hi, I am about to finish up OpenXcom and would like to continue my Xcom marathon on to Terror from the Deep :) Unfortunately there isn't a OpenXcom version of it (yet?), so I would like to hear, what is the best way to get the game running smoothly like OpenXcom? I have the Steam-version of the game, but it seems pretty poorly optimated, so maybe there are some good mods or configurations I don't know of?

Check out the "TFTD Extender" at strategy core. (https://www.strategycore.co.uk/forums/topic/9867-tftd-extender/) Tycho has done a great job to adopt the UFO loader to TFTD and add all kinds of mods via config file.

I'm currently playing this right now!
I'm 4 crashed UFO's and 1 Terror site into it. Unfortunately I'm getting hammered in this terror mission so I might have to put my tail between my legs and make a run for it...
