There's a hard time limit, so that's one possibility for what happened, iirc.

...hard time limit...

I hope that's not a hardcoded time limit... :)  anybody here who can confirm this? is there a time limit? where can we change it? :) :)

there is no time limit.

game over conditions:

last remaining base destroyed by alien retaliation.

council gives you a terrible rating two months in a row.

you go into debt for over 2 million dollars (due to base maintenance, etc.) 2 months in a row.

you fail on either of the mars missions.

What are the conditions for countries leaving the council? ie, is it possible to have all countries under alien control without getting two Terrible ratings?

I always thought the condition was that you had no world funding left, as opposed to two month rating. But then i haven't checked ufopaedia

Really? I could have sworn we were talking about a hard game end happening if you didn't eventually go to Cydonia. Maybe I just misremembered it though =/

technically speaking....

once all possible countries are infiltrated, you have to make enough money to be self sufficient, which can be near impossible with 8 bases.

Could be possible to have some Custom difficult or Custom Scenario? Like the special options, but more like a window where to change the rules for the metagame. Where you can choose, for example, very hard AI for Aliens on battlefield, but countries will be never defected to aliens? Aliens that never will make bases on earth, or just to add how many bases from aliens are build at the beginning of the game.

a more differentiated game setup screen like in civilization? that would actually be nice, I think. a screen where all those custom options that people have been creating for themselves could be toggled ("only one xcom base", "cannot use alien weapons", "cannot sell alien weapons", ...) and also custom win/lose conditions. I wholeheartedly support this idea!
