Modular Rulesets for Nightly Builds?
« on: May 02, 2022, 05:00:25 pm »
Greetings, and thanks in advance for any help provided!

Reading this - www dot ufopaedia dot org/index.php/Rulesets_(OpenXcom)#Modular_Rulesets - it appears to be written for a Milestones build (Xcom1Ruleset.rul), whereas the nightly builds have a bunch of individual RUL files already.

Is it necessary or recommended to edit these files directly, or should I also try to use a Modular Ruleset?  If Modular, how/where would I need to store the RUL files, and how would I ensure they load (is it the CFG file)?

It is generally NOT recommended to edit existing files (unless you are their author), whether they are the xcom1/xcom2 rulesets provided with OpenXcom or any custom mod by any of the modders from the community.

It is recommended to create your own mod that will add, modify or delete whatever you want.

You can download and check any custom mod to see what the mod structure looks like.
The mod will load as soon as you enable it in the GUI, no need to change anything in the CFG file.

Understood on not editing the existing RUL files.  So I create my RUL file, then store it...where?  Once I do this it will show up as an option in the GUI?

You put it in a folder called Ruleset within your own mod folder... as I said, download and check any mod, it will be clear immediately.

Once you do it, your mod will appear in the list of all mods... scroll all the way to the bottom to find your mod.

Don't forget to edit metadata in your mod root folder, so you could see it in mod list  ;)
