Such discussions go on endlessly and can be heated especially when discussing current personalities. What it does bring up in my mind and been bandied about is more sides,
Already there is:
1-- the Aliens
2-- Xcomers
3 --the civilians (non combatants, generally fleeing from the aliens )
Additional sides
4--Armed civilians or other allies of Xcomers. (The current issue is the existing civilian AI of (3) above does not accommodate armed civilians well and/ or the aliens do not respond appropriately to them).

A crash landed UFO map is host to the potential of least three sides; the Aliens, Xcom soldiers and ambitious local looters (this could be done as per individual maps that are in the random rotation).
6--Side friendly to the aliens. Said UFO map is in a country that made a deal with the aliens, then soldiers from that nation are safeguarding the wreck, less troops guarding at night than during the day, so NIGHT MISSION becomes preferable or maybe the only option. (this means the game now needs to know the crash is in an alien friendly nation and populate the map accordingly).
If I have been following previous conversations correctly, extra sides were difficult to implement without changing the AI of existing sides to act appropriately along with other things, but this is the suggestion forum and we shall ask for pie in the sky, and who knows, some of that we could get,,,,
