[WIP] Sentry Gun
« on: July 08, 2017, 01:58:10 am »
So I saw an older thread about some sort of Sentry Gun which utilised limited time units I thought I would try something out, tonights experiment is the Overwatch Sentry Gun system.

Currently I have a sprite which is a combination of the scout drone tank tracks and a turret sprite from another game and it doesn't look too bad.  Through in a drone gun sound from Aliens and hey presto!

I don't know if it can be coded, but it'd be cool if you could hook up a static sentry-unit a soldier can spawn from an inventory obj, like the ones from alien for securing an area or corridor, rather than as a lesser-soldier that takes up a transport slot. Looks cool though man!

Yes, this post here embeds a video showing someone having done that very thing. I think it could work great with low time unit sentries.

Cool video, hopefully it can be done by someone.

A large heavy 2x6 Auto-Sentry you "throw" at a max of one space would be cool, maybe with a short targeting range, no movement. Like a high end proximity grenade.
I like the video's idea of a flying-probe unit, keeps the use limited as a tool.

I wonder too though if it might be possible to have a mind-control device just for machines, so you lose a soldier's TU on a radio-control-device to make use of a robot for a turn.

I'd like to use drones in my games, but I think I'd end up not using them at all, so I can train a disposable  rookie.

In one of the mods there is a flying UAV you can build, think it's Area 51 :)

this was the original thread, i'm not sure what happened to the code but it's probably either out there somewhere or easy to recreate

If you need some other sprites for small tanks size 1x1 maybe also take a look at the Support Drone Mod i made.

Had a quick play with this concept again.  Thought could I simply take the vanilla handobs and overlay them onto the scout drone mod ...

Think it might look a bit better than the original version I came up with.

this is amazing, even for UAV and drone deployment, does someone knows any mod with this mechanics?
