Need Help
« on: December 12, 2014, 08:30:28 am »
I bought Xcom: UFO Defense and have installed and reinstalled OpenXcom and have yet to get it working, and I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong.  I've followed all installation instructions, multiple times, to no avail.  Soon as I double click the desktop shortcut it crashes and and says "OpenXcom has stopped working."  In the openxcom.log it says:
[12-12-2014 01:06:42]   [INFO]   Data folder is:
[12-12-2014 01:06:42]   [INFO]   Data search is:

[12-12-2014 01:06:42]   [INFO]   SDL_mixer initialized successfully.

There's no error message or anything other saying it's stopped working.  Here's my Dxdiag: (edit - link redacted)

Any help would be greatly appreciated, and thanks.

the next step after that should be video initialization, something like
"[12-12-2014 01:06:42]   [INFO]   Attempting to set display to 640x400x32..."
so i'm guessing there's some kind of video driver error or something?

try setting the following options in your config file:

Code: [Select]
  useOpenGLShader: Shaders/Raw.OpenGL.shader
  vSyncForOpenGL: true
  maxFrameSkip: 0
  useOpenGL: true

and possibly these as well:

Code: [Select]
  useHQXFilter: false
  useXBRZFilter: false
  useScaleFilter: false
  useOpenGLSmoothing: true

that is, assuming that openGL isn't the problem to begin with. ;)

also, try the nightly, some people seem to have better luck with that than the milestone for whatever reason.

I couldn't find the config file but the latest nightly worked lol.  When I start a new game with the nightly version it crashed to desktop when I click Ok and the log reads: [11-12-2014 22:29:33]   [WARN]   yaml-cpp: error at line 0, column 0: bad file

no sign of an config file at all? hmm... broken folder permissions? maybe you need to run as administrator or something?

here's a default config file:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/47596892/OXCStuff/options.cfg

put it in the following folder:

C:\Users\Myname\Documents\OpenXcom\

if it doesn't exist already.

Lol I don't know.  I've tried running as Admin and for whatever reason the config wasn't there.  It still crashes after I added it though.  The menu comes up fine for some reason.

the MENU comes up, but it won't let you start a new game? or is new battle mode the problem?

Yes.  First the intro then menu.  I can get into options and change stuff but when I click new game and then click the ok button after picking difficulty it just closes with no error.  I've tried everything I can think of to fix it.  Uninstalling and reinstalling drivers, game....admin rights.  All that so I have no idea what's causing it.

when you installed the nightly version, did you extract the ruleset and other files as well?

Ok update: if I go to "New Battle" and hit ok this error pops up "Map generator encountered an error: DEFAULT script not found."

ok, your ruleset wasn't updated properly when you updated to the nightly.
check the following folders:
C:\Program Files\OpenXcom\data\
C:\Users\Myname\Documents\OpenXcom\data\

check for an old xcom1ruleset.rul and update it, and you should be on your way.
sorry for the inconvenience, it'll be fixed it in the next version
