Soldier names
« on: March 17, 2014, 07:01:18 pm »
Hi,

is there a place, where I can propose names for soldiers?

How do the devs stand to the idea of taking the own name?  ;)

In the data folder, there is a SoldierName folder where you can add and remove names. If you want to get set up with github, you can make a pull request of your changes. Otherwise you can politely ask the devs on the IRC.

If you're asking because there is a lack of certain types of names, here are the translation forums : https://openxcom.org/forum/index.php?board=6.0

Easy to add/replace, and fixed as well so you don't even need to give them last names so you can just have first names (and add Dev names if you want so you can get a guy called SupSuper and Warboy)

That's why in another thread of the same name I wrote:
Perhaps the simplest method would be to have one a function where one file can only apply to one specific nationality, but one nationality can be tied to several files. This would mean that different nationalities with the same nameset would need separate files of mostly the same content, which isn't very elegant but would solve these problems without creating new ones.
Therefore, you would have a nationality "Australian" which has its own name file, with anything that looks appropriate - regardless of linguistic origin.

as for adding names to the lists, it's easy enough if you can figure out a github pull request, but some people just post in a thread when they update a name file (should be easy to find it) and we can grab it from there

My real name is possible, if it makes you feel better :P but no nicknames in vanilla.

I really would like to see my name permanent in the game...  ;)

Hey, one thing:
In the german.nam there is no "femaleLast"... Special reason for this?

femaleLast is for languages which have separate last names (or last name endings) by gender. Languages that don't use gender-dependent last names only have "maleLast", which is then used for everyone.
