individual MCDs have their own inherent shade values which you can use to customize the lighting inside your base, the default xcom base tileset has this set for all floor tiles, i believe.
as for making it darker "outside" simply alter the shade value of the deployment, only values above 9 will alter visibility, but if the floor tiles themselves have a lower shade value, they will take precedent.

Help / Re: Different elevator behaviour in OpenXCOM and OpenTFTD?

the difference is in the loftemps data, ufo lifts have no voxels, whereas TFTD ones do.

https://www.ufopaedia.org/index.php/Ruleset_List_Order_(OpenXcom)

for rocket launcher ammo you'll want to set the listorder to something in the 3101-3499 range

for the inventory image, you'll want to add an ExtraSprite entry, give it a number, and reference that number in the item definition.

as for the UFOpedia entry, that's pretty straightforward, just some ExtraStrings and some copy/paste.

i'd go into more detail but i don't have the energy right now, if you haven't got it sorted by the time i wake up, i'll give you a run-down or something.
additionally: the openxcom discord server is probably your best knowledge base resource, there are people there that are fairly well versed in the specifics of modding and you can get your answers in real time.

yes, this is doable, we do exactly that in TFTD to handle artefact sites

if it supports exporting and importing palettes, just export the palette from a known-good image and import it into any future work

i guess you could also use the colour replacer tool if there's one available

easiest method i've found:
first, save the default palette.
then create a copy of the palette with all the colours except the specific 16 you need to be using changed to something like #FF00FF or #00FF00 and save it seperately.
next, convert the source image to RGB
then convert the source image back to an indexed palette, importing the altered palette you saved earlier, this should auto-assign all the colours correctly.
lastly, import the default palette WITHOUT converting to RGB.

the first and last steps are entirely optional, but should be considered "good practice"

use the second-to-last 16 colours in the geoscape palette (as described here)

Open Feedback / Re: How do aliens interact with ammunition?
« on: April 06, 2018, 11:21:20 am »
You mean in alienDeployments?

So, as a follow on, if I wanted the aliens to do more damage with a weapon than XCOM does (say it's the late game and I want to up damage but not switch to 'all heavy plasma all the time')
I could create a non-recoverable ammo type that does the damage I want, make sure it's listed ahead of the regular ammo in the list order, and then when I give it to aliens alongside the regular clip they'll use it and reap the benefits but it will never become 'visible' to the player? They'll find a gun and regular ammo as expected?

yes.
