1) in the options menu, there's a "mods" section, you can select TFTD from a drop-down menu in there (assuming you have the files in place)
2) first thing you should do after building your first base is assign research, then start building alien containment and a large radar facility. everything beyond that is basically up to you.

you probably need to enable file name extensions
delete the existing dosbox.exe and double check the filename of openxcom's

extract the archive to the folder, rename openxcom.exe to dosbox.exe, move the contents of the "TFD" folder to "TFTD", launch it through steam, et voila

what you see on-screen and what the game uses behind the scenes are two very different things.
you see a 2D sprite-based representation/interpretation of a 3D voxel-based world.
if anything, it's a visual difference only.
take my word for it, the trajectory calculation is as identical to the original as possible.

main problem is the 256 colour palette, not many video formats fit that mould, FLC does.

the accuracy model in openxcom is 1:1 with the original, we went to painstaking efforts to ensure that.
