XPiratez / When is protective gear is in effect?

There are a number of protective gear for the gals, such as Space Towel, coats, bras, shirts and others.
Do any of them work if not in the proper (e.g. Wear, Hat, Jew) slots? Is there a way to determine it in the analysis?
While Peg Leg and Towel says that 'simply having it' will grant a buff in the description, the Fan and many other protective gear like Chem Coat doesn't, leading me to assume they might or might not.
