Programming / Re: Battlescape development
« on: February 14, 2013, 11:10:59 am »
It's a matter of preference imo, both are used. In fact in 3D modelling tools, like 3D studio max, when creating a box for example, you are asked to enter width/length/height. Because you use these words daily when defining the size of objects, it should be familiar terms.

I don't think it's the most urgent problem in openxcom at the moment, better we spend our valuable time (our _Tsize?) in fixing horrible things like aliens seeing and shooting through the roof of the Skyranger... I was kinda shocked during the last stream, I've never seen that happen before.

I love screenshots with speech bubbles :)
About the exploit:
it was first brought up here: https://openxcom.org/forum/index.php/topic,586.msg5524.html#msg5524
and I fixed it.
but after this bug: https://openxcom.org/forum/index.php/topic,678.0.html
I removed the fix again, as it was causing this bug
I was reminded again here: https://openxcom.org/forum/index.php/topic,820.0.html
and here :)
If I get reminded enough times, I might even get out of my lazy chair and get in my working chair and try fix it :p someday

Programming / Re: HQX and scale2x filters
« on: February 09, 2013, 09:42:08 am »
Yeah, that's the kind of effect you get from HQX, I made a topic about it ages ago: https://openxcom.org/forum/index.php/topic,118 with a screenshot, and because nobody really liked it, it was never implemented.
But since then the community has grown, the chances are there are a few people out there that might like it... I'm not sure I would ever use it, it gives freaky results sometimes.

I think it's because the native resolution, sprites of 32x40 px, is just a bit too low for scalers to make something out of it. They look a lot better on old games that just have tiny bit more resolution and natively run on 640x480 and up.

Offtopic / Re: shocking news: XCom: Enemy Unknown by Firaxis

I'm not a fast gamer, so I only finished my game on normal difficulty last night. But I must say it was really great towards the end. Like other people here, I really enjoyed every bit. Very addictive once you get sucked up in the story, and you really want to beat them.

The different psionic skills are fun. The class and skill system is fun. There is enough variation in the missions. I actually regret I did the end mission so soon, I wanted to do some more battles, cause I didn't really test out the flying armor and the higher level SHIVs yet.
I'm certainly going to play this game some more, what hardly ever happens with modern games once I finished them (if I even finish them before getting bored)

Haha, what did happen at 6:55? I guess he did something wrong at reloading the gun and it exploded in his hands...

edit: And lol at the end :)

Programming / Re: Paletted 8bit -> 24bit shading.

If you check out the TFTD Tactical palettes it is even more obvious:
https://www.ufopaedia.org/index.php?title=PALETTES.DAT

..how important the palette colors are. If you would just apply a flat shade, no matter if you are above or under water, you'll loose the underwater effect of the TFTD battlescapes.

When using opengl, you can use shader programs to do the shading.
I tested openxcom with 24bit sprites in a very rough way, and it was painfully slow in software mode, so I assume it needs hardware acceleration anyway.

I know for example in Skyrim there are various mods that change the shader programs that darken textures during sunset, night and dawn to make them more realistic and less flat.

It's more a discussion of taste. Ufo tts uses 24bit graphics and "flat" shading. I don't remember anyone complain, I didn't even really notice it.
Example:

edit: well there are probably better screenshots out there, but I can't access anything here at work. But you get the point. I like to see real examples, not theory. So show the difference between good and bad, and then we make a poll to see how bad bad actually is. And if it is really bad, then we can look for a solution. Now it's like looking for a solution to a problem that is not even proven it's a problem at all.

Suggestions / Re: Game-Date could always start in the "near future"
« on: January 21, 2013, 06:27:25 pm »
It's a fictional story, with dates that are set by the author. Like the story of the Lord Of The Rings has set dates, which have been used in the movie. I don't think you should just go ahead and change them around a bit, purists with pitchforks might come out of their caves and burn your house down.

The First Alien War (AW-I) started 1999, January 1st.

It would have been impressive if the one taking the shot would have aimed a little further so that spotter didn't die :)

I could ask a lawyer if you really want (friend of sister in law), but I'm afraid to get laughed at :p And it probably applies to Belgium law, so I don't know how useful that is to whatever other country the guy creating art work is in?

What happens if you draw a grenade and it accidently looks like the grenade from xcom? Who will decide how far your grenade looks from the xcom grenade drawing? How much years you go into jail from drawing a grenade that looks like an xcom grenade? It is fun discussing about this, but isn't it a bit stupid?

Does anyone has any proof that somone ever did a small fangame thing like this and got thrown into jail or got to pay money?
Who will be responsible and needs to pay the fine? SupSuper? OpenXCom is not even a company.

And even if someone got thrown into jail - it will be world news ! OpenXcom will become famous! So I would only encourage it. If I got the time and skills I wouldn't hesitate.
(sarcastic)
