The X-Com Files / Re: Syndrome of hiding aliens
« on: June 22, 2022, 06:40:58 pm »
Greetings!
Surely everyone is familiar with the problem of finding the last alien.
Are there any solutions to the problem in this modification?

After some turns Bug Hunt is activated and you can see the aliens on the map. Something like 40 or so turns, I think.

So I tend to play this modpack in short spurts when I am in the mood for Xcom, sometimes long enough between that there is a major update or two. I don't feel like starting fresh each time I feel like some Xcom so I continue the same game, which I know leads to its own problems and missed opportunities one of which is a minor problem I am now wanting to work out.

I was looking through the Data Viewer and only recently noticed I was missing the Alenium Shard you apparently get from the X-COM History: Kiryu-Kai research that was added so many updates ago. I believe I had already gotten the research some time before that update and then skipped ahead a few more when I lost and regained interest, causing difference in research. (I have only now just gotten around to clearing cults by 1999 which shows how slow I am at this game)

I know this is a problem entirely of my own doing by not updated frequently or restarting if needed, and I have messed with the save for this one instance and re-research the tech and it worked out fine.

So far it hasn't been a major problem and I wouldn't have noticed I was missing anything if I hadn't randomly come across it. I am just curious if there are other things I may have missed out on in my long, infrequent campaign and if there was a good way to refresh the research short of editing the save and re-researching everything I have.

Don't you get it from an event that is triggered by the Kiryu-kai research? I have also started before the Alenium shard was added and I have 3 shards right now. I have been playing since 0.9 something and I don't remember any savgame breaking changes.

Why wouldn't this make sense, given that the underlying engine uses 3D space for hit calclation? You can actually take a first person screenshot (F10 by default) to see what the unit you have selected sees on the battlescape. You might also want to take a look at this and take into account that XCF implements the accuracy fall off option offered by OXCE.

*Jaw dropped* You can take 1st person screenshots!? I will have to try that.

In addition the Xcomfiles wiki has calculations for damage at distance. It should be able to show actual accuracy too.

The only thing I dislike about this game is the accuracy problems with fences and elevated grounds. Fences I can kind of understand, but I struggle to understand why someone standing exposed on a hill (I am also flanking him so there it is not like only his head is visible etc) can't be hit accurately. I am not even sure what the problem is or even if it exists but can someone explain why I seem to keep missing enemies on slopes and hills? I am guessing it is the original game's issue rather than the mod's, but if so can it not be fixed? Or is there some kind of a logic to it?

If you shoot at a very oblique angle the enemy might be shwoing a smaller profile and being harder to hit. The way shooting at a human from above will present a smaller target than from the front or side.

Targets in the engine are cylinders. May be you are seeing a smaller cross section. Or may be the slope is actually covering part of the target.

In any case it is hard to determine if a target is or isn't obstructed.

Next mission is The Root of all Evil.

And another Ironmanish moment, as I realize I forgot to bring the flares I bought recently. Again.

Some research is done and next mission pops up. Can X-COM deal with the Root of all Evil?
Probably not yet.

EDIT: Oh, look who forgot to attach a file.

Not really, you ran away before it got to that. :P

:) I live to commit atrocities against the English language.

Also fixing grammer on a jpg will be somewhat hard to do.

Are you trying to not meta-game or have never ventured into zombie catacombs before? Because trying to shoot someone in full plate with buckshot and pistol ammo is... well, actually, it's not as useless as it sounds in reality, but these zombies are tough.

Both. I stopped my last Playthrough at the end of 1998 with Two Cults removed and just researched Promotion III. At that point I decided I want to write this AAR and decided that starting from the middle isn't a good idea unless you are George Lucas.

I haven't gotten to the catacombs yet. And I do roleplay it a bit. Also all "Fuck it" last minute before leaving shots are mandatory. Unless the ammo is extremely expensive or other lame reasons.

I should add it to house rules along with "All missions must be attempted unless there are serious reasons not to. Like lack of agents or no egress available."

Female armour designed to account for breast size is a thing. Or quite uncomfortable for said female. Not as over the top as that Tomb Guard, of course. Then again, didn't Batman have nipples on his armour once? :D

Medieval Full Plates have a large empty space on the chest for weapons that pierced the plate but only a little or to lessen impacts that didn't pierce it. A kind of spaced armor. And you will be wearing gambeson underneath, which is quite bulky as well. Not to mention that the external boobs introduce weak points. Unless they are purely cosmetic and glued to the plate.

I just stumbled upon the heavy crossbow again and despite the earlier discussion, this is definitely a case where the strength damage is misplaced. Unlike a bow, you really can't half-cock a crossbow if you're too weak.

I haven't seen the actual Heavy Crossbow in game, but don't these have a crank for reloading?

Turns 6 - end.

I meat a female armoured zombie. Didn't they heard about boobs on armors? Not a thing.

Our agents call home: "Mommy, come pick me up. There are GIRLS here!"

Turns 2 - 5

I should have packed in a Rookie or two in the Van. It is small, but we must pay our sacrifices.

I sell the Plasma weapons and build a new base in Bioko. I decided that Central Africa should have Osprey range to whatever parts of the Americas are outside range from Franz Josef Land.

Also the Van finally gets to the Zombie Catacombs. I have no illusions of clearing them up with 4 agents. The plan is to kill some zombies and retreat.

Actually, it makes black lotus pretty trivial, thanks! I never thought that they have just simple camo, I thought its something like psi-power checks or something(thanks to ordinary warriors)

What else has this Anticamo property?

Well anti-camo is what the game calls the ability to see units from further away than usually allowed. It is game engine name.

In lore Black Lotus Assassins use some Psi skill to be invisible, I think.

You can look for such things in the Info button.

Hmm, should I make a 'random offerings' thread to keep this one more focused?

I have another combo image proposal, because I never liked how Black Lotus doesn't have a mid-level sensei/sifu.

Mid level? This man counted to infinity. Twice.

...since what are morals?

Hey we are saving the world here. We are willing to send wave after wave of rookies at the problem. The Aliens can't have that much ammo, right? And these Farmers make excellent money on the organ market.

I fixed the Bulgarian.nam's to have Bulgarian grammer. I haven't added or removed names. Some of the female names are actually russian, so I will assume they are imigrants or children of imigrants.
