Troubleshooting / Re: Openxcom: How to install?
« on: October 01, 2021, 11:10:30 pm »
The last thing i want to do is give advice that is wrong advice. So please take this at face value. But i ran into a similar issue as the OP did. OpenXcom didnt work for me but I read another thread that said i didnt need to install both openXcom and OXCE. So I only installed OXCE and then copied my OG files to that.

It worked.

FYI- I also put that folder on my desktop. I dont know if that helped or not but it worked.

I'm pretty savy when it comes to folders and files. But I simply couldnt really grasp how this worked (my own fault). I had to realize that this isnt really a patch for the OG (original game) but it is its own Application using files from the OG.

I just had to read this forum and some of the admins posts. they were super helpful and i feel gifted to have this working now.

Troubleshooting / Re: Nothing to research, game is dead?
« on: October 01, 2021, 10:56:02 pm »
I think the game being so difficult for me in the beginning is what made me keep playing it and try to beat it. The worse thing was on early PlayStation releases like i had, There was a memory card/save problem where all your work would be borked and you'd have to start all over again. I began using 2 memory cards doing alternate saves.
I got my kid into it and we both beat the game together. It was like we accomplished this huge task as a family. like we were ready to throw a "X com winners" party dressed as Ethereal's.

Start a new game.

This has happened to me once before using the OG. Actually a commander would show up in research, then after the report was complete, it would no longer show anything and no reprt. Catch another one, same loop.

Open Feedback / Aliens AI is overpowering me in OXCE
« on: October 01, 2021, 09:35:34 pm »
Just as the title says. Im using OXCE in Beginner mode (I know slightly embarrassing). But the AI is super strong. im getting hammed in my first Terror attack.
is there any settings that might help me out ?

I have to say, i am so impressed by the is version and it's deep editing. I've been playing this game since 1995 And it's almost as if i rediscovered it again.

thank you for any suggesitons.

Suggestions / Medical Personal
« on: September 29, 2021, 01:14:35 pm »
I always thought this game needed medics.
A couple medical personal to go on missions.

Their TV rate- 100.
Their armor and health- very high.
Their only job- to heal wounded soldiers.
Not sure if possible- Have them undetected by aliens- so they are not fired at.

I would even have them in white hospital clothes.
Maybe carrying only a small pistol for defense.

Great. You mean the original DOS version? Nowdays I almost can't play it, due to poor GUI (esp mouse is bad) and also the glitches are kinda annoying.

OpenXCOM is not "a patch" for the DOS game, it is complete rewrite. Actually it seems there are two versions of the complete rewrite:

- OpenXCOM

- OXCE - adds far more things

Anyway, you install them as a new program, they will prompt about location of the original game so they can copy the datafiles (resources graphics maps etc) of the game.

There are also big mods here, one was The Final Mod modpack (but now discontinued?) which seems to be kinda replaced by the XCom Files megamod.  There are also complete rewrites that change it to other game (but same mechanics) like the X-Pirates thing.

Thank you for your helpful info.
When i click on the Downloads page, it defaults to "Milestones" / Latest patch.
I wondering if i have to use that patch first before installing. Or is that patch the Open X com ?

Thanks again. i really appreciate the help.
I should probably do some more research myself before asking any of you to feed me info (my apologies) I'm just slightly confused.

Also agree, the original version, the mouse movements are horrible. Laggy graphics, etc.

Thanks

Oh my gosh, I thought i was the only one who was this obsessed with this game. I feel amongst friends. With that being said, I beat the original game last night. However with a bit of sadness, I lost Captain Webber Hamburger. I stuck a post it to my PC (A plaque to commemorate his service fighting the evil alien menace). He was taken far too soon at the hands of a chrysalis. What hurts even worse is I have to take him out myself. But I let his family know, he lost his life saving the world...

Anyway, thank you guys and girls for all your reply's. I'm getting ready to install the open x com patch.
but a few questions first.

Do i apply the patch first, then install open x com ?

I'm using this on dos box so everything is located in C:\GOG Games\XCOM UFO Defense.

Thank you so  much for all your help.

Just want to share my love for this game and share my history with it. I bought this game around 1996 for PlayStation 1. I honestly didn't even think I would like it because its graphics were a little behind what Sony was coming out with for the PS1. but as I played it more and more, I began to love it. Im still playing it now using GOG or DOD or something on PC windows 8. I also have TFTD and the third one (apocalypse I believe), which is ridiculously hard but the first one i keep going back to over and over again. Every few years I beat it again. like an old friend.

Anyway, Do the mods work on the version i use ?
Thanks for letting me join.
